At a time when few women were educated or literate and rarely travelled German-born naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647 1717) made history with her studies of insects in Surinam. Trained as a copperplate engraver and watercolorist, she documented the metamorphosis of butterflies, laying the foundation for modern entomology. What Merian observed when breeding native species of butterfly triggered her curiosity, and spurred her to further investigation; the development from ovum, via larva and chrysalis, to adult butterfly was not fully understood in the 17th century. And not every pupa developed into a butterfly, which puzzled Merian for a long time. On seeing a collection of butterflies from Dutch Guiana, modern Surinam, she decided to study tropical flora and fauna, to discover whether the moths and butterflies she saw in collections shared the same life cycle as those she had bred: the egg and caterpillar stage. In 1699 she sailed for South America with daughter Dorothea, the first time any woman had ventured on a journey of exploration on this scale. Having evaluated and categorized her specimens, in 1705 she published her major work Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, in Dutch and Latin. She made 60 copperplate engravings to illustrate the stages of insect development, arranged around the cultivated and wild plants she had encountered on her travels. With its detailed text and imagery, the Metamorphosis is the first work on the natural history of Surinam. For 17th century Europeans it was an insight into an unknown world. TASCHEN s reprint of a hand-colored first edition copy includes the complete plates with a commentary by Katharina Schmidt-Loske. Merian accomplished a pioneering achievement of the modern age. This publication pays homage to her work and offers readers an opportunity to appreciate her sumptuous engravings.

A classic worth a second look and an update

Although first published in 1994, a long time ago in the rapidly developing science of evolutionary psychology, Robert Wright's seminal book remains an excellent introduction to the subject. The text crackles with an incisive wit that says, yes we're animals, but we can live with that. The discussion is thorough, ranging from a rather intense focus on Charles Darwin and his life through the sexist and morality debate occasioned by the publication of Edward O. Wilson's Sociobiology in 1975, to the rise of the use of primate comparisons fueled by Jane Goodall's instant classic, The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior (1986). Wright has some rather serious fun with human sexual behavior as seen from the perspective of evolutionary psychology, but he spends even more time worrying (to no good effect, in my opinion) about altruism and the shaky concept of kin selection. The title is partly ironic, since much of the material suggests that we are something less than "moral." The "Everyday Life" in the title is an allusion to Freud (The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, 1904) who makes a dual appearance in the text, first as a kind of not-yet-illuminated precursor to modern Darwinian thought, and second as the reigning champ of psychology that evolutionary psychology is out to dethrone. (See especially page 314.)

What's exciting about evolutionary psychology is that for the first time psychology has a firm scientific foundation upon which to build. But it's a tough subject for some people, I think, mainly because they confuse "is" with "ought." The discoveries of evolutionary psychology about the differing reproductive strategies of the sexes offend some people in the same way that Darwin's insight about our kinship with (other) animals offended the Victorians. Evolutionary psychology shows us that men lie, cheat and hustle relentlessly for sex, while women manipulate available males into caring for their offspring, and if possible for children fathered by other males. Insights like these are seen by some as immoral imperatives, when in fact they are amoral statements of factual observation. What "is" isn't necessarily the same thing as what ought to be. And really, we shouldn't blame the messenger.

Where Wright's book especially shows its age is in trying to explain altruism. He wasn't aware of the handicap principle developed by Amotz and Avishag in their exciting book, The Handicap Principle: A Missing Piece of Darwin's Puzzle (1997) which nicely explains "altruism" (it's an advertisement of fitness) and a number of other evolutionary conundrums, including Wright's question on page 390, "Why do soldiers die for their country?" Additionally on pages 68-70, where Wright attempts to account for female cuckoldry, he gives three reasons, but seems uncertain of the most important one, which is that a woman, once established in a secure pair-bond will sometimes seek to upgrade the genetic input by having a clandestine fling with what she sees as an alpha male. Also Wright's attempt to account for homosexuality (pages 384-386) stumbles over itself in trying to be politically correct while missing the major point that homosexuality facilitates male bonding and therefore is certainly adaptive since male coalitions increase each member of the coalition's chance of securing females. It fact, Wright misses the whole concept of male bonding. There's not even an index entry for it.

These observations are not to be taken as criticisms of the book since Wright was writing before knowledge of some of these ideas became widespread. The Moral Animal remains an outstanding opus and one that has helped introduce a large readership to the power and efficacy of evolutionary psychology, a scientific approach to psychology that will, I believe, replace the old paradigms currently holding sway in our universities. Of course this will only happen when the old behaviorists, and cognitive and psychoanalytic stalwarts...retire.

I would like to see Wright revise this book in light of the many discoveries made during the nineties and reissue it. His readable and engaging style would make the update fun to read.

One of the best introductions to Evolutionary Psychology

Though a few other books related to Evolutionary Psychology have been written since this, it is still one of the best introductions to the field. It is intelligently written, but not pendantic. Wright discusses many aspects of evolutionary psych. using many examples from the life of Charles Darwin.
Many have criticized this work as a justifying gender inequality, usually as related to male oppression and abuse of females. Wright openly states that he is attempting to explain human behavior from a Darwinian perspective. He argues that this perspective sheds much light on the subject, though he admits is isn't perfect or all inclusive. Wright closes with several behaviors that Evolutionary Psychology can not adequetly explain (most glaringly, homosexuality).
Though many women have been outraged by this work, this book has much to offer for both females and males who read it from a non-ideological perspective. I've read several interviews with Wright and other Evolutionary Psychologists who have stated that by understanding why we (all people) are naturally inclined to behave in certain ways are we better able to control behavioral tendencies that may be detrimental to ourselves and others. When read from this perspective, this book can only help men and women better undertand each other and improve relations between the sexes.

Captivating!

I read the celebrated "Moral Animal" some 10 years ago, then re-read and underlined it at least twice. Finally I had found a theory of human nature and psychology I could wholeheartedly believe in. I was looking for a great quote from that book last week but found I had loaned out both copies - so I bought a new one and ended up re-reading the whole thing.

The quote is: "...humans are a species splendid in their array of moral equipment, tragic in their propensity to misuse it, and pathetic in their constitutional ignorance of the misuse."

Science journalist Robert Wright compiled these findings of evolutionary psychology (EP) for the lay reader in 1994 and "Moral Animal" is still a timely treatise. Matt Ridley introduced his excellent "Red Queen" about the same topic around the same year. Wright writes in an engaging manner, intertwining his pearls with biographical sketches of Charles Darwin. Disclaimer: For those who are offended by the very suggestion that our behavior evolved from apes - and that our behavior is an elaborate, sophisticated manifestation of language and socialization which evolved by natural selection along with a huge brain - you won't like this book.

I realize the following assessment of mine is anecdotal, but here goes: I have seen step-children treated differently than genetic children. I have seen how men and women preen, peacock-like, showing off their best (?) sides during courtships and how they pair off in society according to commonly accepted determinants of status, differing depending on sex. I have read about and subsequently observed how people (unconsciously?) score each other during their social interactions, rating relationship values for the future. I have observed how cheating (generic sense) is more rampant in very large groups where peer-pressure ceases to be such an important deterrent. Finally, game theory concepts utilized in EP are widely adapted and used in self-help books. I could go on with other examples, but, in short, I'm a sucker for EP.

Subsequently, I have read about resistance in university humanities departments to EP - humans being so special and all. We are - in the sense that our intelligence has given us free reign over our world - but humans are still very imperfect. We are poorly designed in many ways (backs, knees, tendency to war, self-delusion) - exactly what one would expect from evolution. Cockroaches or certain scorpions, which can live without food and water for almost a year, are also impressive. There is every reason to believe that our (at times) poor behavior evolved in just as Rube-Goldberg a fashion as did our very complicated and redundant blood clotting mechanism.

Anyway, this book is superb. I will close since I could end up nattering on for more pages than most would want to read. Consider moving "Moral Animal" to closer to the top of your TBR list. A Best Buy.

Loved it!!!

I will be the first one to admit…..I am not a football (aka soccer for us American’s) fan. So when I agreed to review this book, I did so with a sinking heart. I really felt this would be one of those books that I wouldn’t be able to finish. And with it being a self help book, my anxiety over reading it made it even worse.

But once I got into reading the book, I found it was full of some really good advice. Advice that I could dumb down and use on B. See, B is playing softball and if full of self doubt about actually being good. She expressed that to me one day over dinner and I decided to follow some of Mr. Azaria’s self confidence lessons….just changed so they could be on a 10 year old level. And it worked!!! Like truly worked and that really impressed me.

Of course, there were a ton of football (soccer) references in there, which strangely enough I got. Which is really weird because I am not a football (soccer) fan. Go figure….lol.

I also did find the advice in this book can be used towards everyday events too. Nothing that I used but I could see myself using in the foreseeable future.

Will I reccomend this book to family and friends? Yes

Would I buy this book again? Yes

Age Range? All ages but I would think mainly adults would read it.

Azaria provides methods to work through perceived dangers to help master performance anxiety

I normally don't enjoy reading self-help books or anything that may even sound like a self-help book.

However, I found Azaria's writing style, his voice to be very appealing and even humorous at times. While he addresses situations in which fear can and does affect football players, I found myself thinking that the advice could be applied to really any situation where performance anxiety can arise (hello public speaking).

Just about everyone I know, suffers from public speaking anxiety. Azaria pointed out that our body's reaction (the nausea, sweaty palms, racing heartbeat and shakiness) is our body's fight-or-flight response. That anxiety over a perceived danger is making our body respond as though there were actual life-threatening danger and succumbing to that is what causes athletes to hesitate on a shot they know they can take. It causes one to stutter in the middle of a speech you could have given in your sleep.

Azaria provides methods to work through perceived dangers to help master performance anxiety in ways that can not only help athletes, but just about any one who has ever suffered performance anxiety.

A book that is not only great for Soccer players, but also other team players as well!

My son is a soccer player! He plays on an elite team and is always searching for ways to push himself further. I was really excited about reading this book because I hoped that it could give him some useful tips on how to improve. Although some of the concepts in this book have been floating around for many years, it is nice to be reminded of them and written in a way that any athlete, ages 11-12 years old and up can understand and implement. It's all about facing your fears. Your fears will be unique to you, since not everyone has the same hurdles to overcome.

There are letters and blurbs that are in the book, that you can copy and put out in a place where you can read them often as reminders that essentially state that your potential is endless as long as you don't let your fears overcome you (i.e. Making mistakes, missing the ball, coach yelling at you for making mistakes, letting down your fans/family etc...etc...). Lots of great little messages and tips. I gave this 4 stars because it tended to be just a little repetitive and there were several grammar and spelling errors that need a fix. Nonetheless, this is a great book for kids 11-18 (roughly), trying to go further in their sport, and of course it has tidbits of usefulness for us adults too. :).

SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS is creatively written and a thoroughly fun read

Scott just finished a great summer with his friends, Lee and Wesley, and he is more than ready to start his sophomore year. After a chaotic freshmen year full of adventure and life lessons, Scott feels like he’s ready to handle anything. At first he’s right --- sophomore year starts out smoothly. Scott’s already made a few new friends, helped a freshmen survive his first day and got assigned a great spot on the school paper. While his parents are busy with work and the new baby, they support Scott in every way they can. Unfortunately, Scott’s good luck doesn’t last long. His biology teacher and English teacher both seem to have it out for him, and his grades are starting to slip because of it. Plus, Lee’s dad doesn’t seem to like Scott much either, which isn’t great considering how much Scott wants to ask Lee out.

As the year goes on, things seem to go from bad to worse. Scott’s grades slip so low that he isn’t allowed to participate in any extracurricular activities, including the paper. His plan to make money by selling copies of his freshman survival guide is foiled when someone uploads a copy online, free for all to see. Not to mention, Scott still hasn’t asked Lee out on a real date and the school year is coming to a close. When the school paper and other clubs are cut from the school budget and his biology teacher is threatened to be fired for refusing to teach creationism, Scott knows he has to step up to the plate and get out of his sophomore slump for good.

Funny and heartfelt, SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS is an excellent follow-up to author David Lubar’s SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE. While fans of SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE will love this novel, people who haven’t read the companion will also find it very enjoyable and will be able to follow along easily. Told through first person point of view narrative and journal entries, SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS is creatively written and a thoroughly fun read. The lovable characters and high school drama will draw readers in right away. While the book is pretty light-hearted for the most part, it definitely covers some more serious topics, including corruption in schools. However, the more serious parts were kept relatively short, and the overall feel of the novel is light and fun. Personally, I wish that Lubar would have covered the topic of suicide more deeply in this novel, as he touched on it in SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE, and I feel like it is a serious issue in high schools nationwide. Otherwise, however, Lubar did a fantastic job of crafting a completely enjoyable read.

Fans of SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE will love seeing their favorite characters again, including Scott, Lee and Wesley. Scott is still a lovable book nerd, but in SOPHOMORES AND OTHER OXYMORONS he loses the nervousness from his freshmen year and gains a slightly arrogant air. The events of the novel, however, quickly lead him to realize that he doesn’t know everything quite yet --- even if he did manage to survive his freshmen year successfully. Even with his flaws, Scott’s a good character and a good guy that readers will really enjoy. Lee is also just as gothic as she was in the first novel. We see more of her in this book, which is great because she’s such a fun character. She’s highly opinionated and intelligent and a great friend to Scott. She’s a lot friendlier and a little less snarky in this novel than she was in the last, but that’s to be expected since she and Scott are closer friends in this novel --- I did miss some of her snark, though. Overall, Lubar created some quality characters who readers will love. Hopefully we will see more from Lubar --- perhaps a third and fourth novel detailing Scott’s attempts to survive his last two years of high school?

This is a sequel to a good YA read, Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie (which came out in 2007). Scott Hudson has survived freshmen year of high school and sophomore year is upon him. He realizes that he has reached a point where he might actually begin to enjoy high school--until he meets a few of his new 10th grade teachers, gets into some trouble and realizes that his old friend Kyle is still avoiding him. This book has a lot of humor in it, as well as realistic dilemmas faced by high school students. The characters are intelligent, flawed but realistic and interesting to readers. Both high school boys and girls would like this series. I borrowed this book from the town library.

This is an excellent book both technically and because it gives a "fresh" European perspective on modern antenna engineering written by practicing antenna designers.

My only criticism is that it has been bound with the cover front to back and upside down!
