A large, gloomy mansion is a must, where murder, madness, and evil abound, with the heroine escaping death by the skin of her teeth. Brides of Falconfell is a good Gothic read

If you love Victoria Holt, Jane Aiken Hodge, Phyllis Whitney, and others of the Gothic genre...you will really enjoy Brides of Falconfell. It is a well written mystery that kept me guessing until the end of the book. It's all there...the spooky castle, mysterious deaths, and plenty of odd characters. Having said that, the reason for a 4 and not a 5 is that I felt Serena was way too self-deprecating for a woman who was depicted as being strong and capable. Other than that, it really is an enjoyable read.

I loved Thayn! I loved Serena! This a wonderful little regency romance about a spinster (still in her twenties) who goes to help the unattainable man she she fell in love with her first season. I enjoyed this so much I am looking at her other books.

A Gothic/Regency romance to enjoy

Blair Bancroft is an accomplished writer, who can adopt different styles, which makes her books really interesting. The intro to this book explains the style-first person, � la most Gothic novels. Think "Rebecca", "Jane Eyre" etc.
The heroine grew on me, as did the hero. The plot is not terribly complicated intellectually-which means that the reader needs to get hooked into the emotions of the characters. For me that was accomplished. I swore I would read only the first couple of chapters the night I bought this, and came to about 2 hours later having gone considerably further. I found myself thinking of the book during the day, and remembering certain passages with pleasure. Not many authors can do that for me.
Not every book needs to be "AWESOME" to give pleasure. There may be readers for whom this is a ho-hum read thinking that the plot isn't anything new. I found that to be just fine-I could enjoy the perils and the pleasures of the ride, and appreciate the skill with which the story is told.

superior attitude superior state of mind

I thought PARAMEDIC was very good, but this book truly surpasses it, Canning develops a true wrting style that is hillarious at times, sad at others, but intense all the way through, if this is Cannings last book, then its a hell of a great note to end on. What really sets it apart from his last work is that it offers a more complete picture of the inner life of a medic rather than a selection of memorable snapshots of performance. exceptional.

To Medic or Not to Medic

There are two types of people who will want to read this book: those who like adventure and those who want to see if EMS is for them. Peter Canning is a real-life paramedic in Hartford,

Connecticut, who once worked as a speech writer for former Governor Lowell Weicker. Both of Canning's books are full to bursting with real-life adventure. EMS crews in Hartford have little down time as they go from heart attack patient to auto wreck to infant not breathing to drug overdose. Canning takes his readers along through adventure after adventure at a dizzying pace.

At the same time, Canning shows some of the toll that EMS work takes on the people who do it. In his first book, Canning makes the job switch to EMS. His progression is the usual one from someone who is thrilled with the excitement of the work to someone who wants to earn the respect of his peers to someone who realizes that it's the patient that counts. In _Rescue 471_ Canning has become a well experienced paramedic.

But there are still struggles. Canning works his way through the times when EMS made the transition from a health need to a business dealing in medicine. His smaller EMS company is bought out by a larger one. There are new regulations promulgated by unknown faces. There's the worry about pay and jobs though one of Canning's friends reminds him that EMS companies still need "meat on the seat." Canning also works his way through the worker burnout caused by the long hours of work and dealing with stressful situations. One night Canning just doesn't care anymore. As he drives home, he speeds through the red traffic signals and arrives at his home breathless. I have to commend him for admitting how close he came to losing it.

EMS work in my part of the country is different yet so much alike. The hours are long. A shift is 24 hours on and 48 hours off. The pay is lousy. The only way that the guys make a living is by going from one shift to the next. One medic once told me he had not been home for 11 days. That was after he told me he was trying to leave EMS for nursing. Most of the smaller EMS companies in this area are now gone. Larger companies have taken over the rural areas and even some of the larger cities. This has lead to a demand for medics with techs being told that they need not apply for a job. So two years of schooling (some less, some more) is required to get a job in EMS. And I know of some areas where the EMS guys are getting burnout in about three years. Oh, and did I say the pay is lousy?

To medic or not to medic. Canning worked his way through his burnout. And me? I still have my National EMS Registration and am proud of it.

Enjoyable reading

I read Peter's first book and you could tell his speach writing back ground in his tales. This book talks more on our level. Being in EMS for 18 years(the last 12 as a Paramedic) I can relate to his feelings of burn out and wondering if it is time to move on. I enjoyed his tales most reminded me in some way of calls I have been on.

About the Author
Dr Yogendra Singh, presently Director of the International Research Institute of Buddhist Studies, Lucknow, is a scholar of Pali and Buddhist Studies. He obtained M.A., Ph.D., and a diploma in Yoga and is having twenty years' teaching experience as associate professor and professor in graduate and post-graduate classes in the University of Kanpur. He has the credit of editing more than twelve research volumes and has presented several research papers in national and international seminars, conferences and journals. Dr Singh has organized many national and international seminars on various aspects of Buddhism in India and abroad. He has also guided many research projects of Buddhist philosophy, religion, art and architecture under the aegis of University Grants Commission. He holds the post of Secretary in the International Research Institute of Buddhist Studies, U.P., India.

A bit disappointed

Almost all Pāli Tipiṭaka was written in Roman script with diacritics. I'm a bit disappointed because the entry of the dictionary is not arranged as follows:

Pāli in Roman - Sanskrit in Devanāgarī - Hindi meaning in Devanāgarī - English meaning

Maybe this edition is mainly used in India.

A preface is useful, if it be useful at all, in convey ing to the reader some fuller notion of the nature of the book he holds in his hand than the brevity of the title page permits, so that he may have guidance as to whether it be worth his reading or not.

This book, then, while quite complete in itself, is written as supplement and complement to Ten Thou sand Miles with a dog-sled, and forms therewith a survey of the interior of Alaska under the totally differ ent aspects of winter and summer. In winter one travels with the dog team almost wherever one wishes; summer travel is confined to the waterways with which interior Alaska is so liberally supplied; so that a book on river voyages may really deal with the whole country so far as the summer is concerned.
