About the Author

Joe O'Mahoney is Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Business School and a Fellow of the CIPD. Prior to this he was Lecturer in Organization and Technology at Lancaster University. Joe has held a number of positions in industry including the role of Senior Business Consultant at 3G Mobile where he was involved with the start up of the company. Joe was also Director and Co-founder of Stay Mobile, Technology Ltd, a company that develops and leases a product for recharging mobile phones in public places. Joe's areas of expertise are change management and consultancy, including innovation and entrepreneurship, cultural change, new product development, and systems design.


Calvert Markham is the Managing Director of Elevation Learning, the leading educator of consultancy practitioners and Visiting Professor in the Practice of Management Consultancy at Cass Business School. Calvert has held the post of President of the Institute of Consulting and Vice Chairman of the global consultancy institute, the ICMCI. He has authored several books on the consultancy industry, with a specific interest in practitioner skills and is a visiting professor at Cass Business School.

Next come some of his challenges: he is afraid of loud noises, he has trouble making friends, and he does not like change. When he leaves the house at night, walking all the way to the local fairgrounds because he loved the Ferris wheel so much, his parents know that something must be done. They take him for a check-up and receive the diagnosis. The doctors and therapists give them some suggestions for helping their son at home and at school. The book concludes with Sam playing the cello at a school concert. Because of the interesting story line, the positive approach, and the notion that others can learn to help Sam instead of expecting him to change, this is an excellent introduction to the topic. The pictures are bright and lively, showing mostly happy faces. The book concludes with 10 helpful tips to remember when a friend or a classmate has Asperger's. She lives in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Liezl�Venter, MA, CCC-SLP has worked in various clinical settings in the the United States and abroad, specializing in children disagnosed with autustic spectrum disorders and Asperger Syndrome. She is also a certified member of the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

Great book to help friends, family, and children understand Aspergers

I gave this book five stars, only because I could not give it more.I have never written a book review before, but after much thought I felt compelled to do so for this book.

The genius of the book is that woven into a wonderful story and captivating artwork is a transcending message about Asperger's Syndrome. As a parent of an Asperger's child I have found this message helpful in explaining my son's unique behaviors to his teachers and classmates, friends, and family. What is most wonderful about the book is that is does not treat the Asperger's child as an individual with a contagious disorder, but simply a child with some differences from the norm and a differing perspective. Sam triumphs in demonstrating that a child with mild Asperger's can succeed if those around the child afford some latitude for the child's actions and understanding that simple things can be troubling and hindering.

I wish this was required reading for all. The promotion of understanding sure would make life easier for these kids.

Amazing Book for Teaching!!

After reading through several books that focused on various disabilities, I chose Understanding Sam and Asperger Syndrome as my favorite children's book about a disability. Asperger Syndrome is a disability that is part of the Autism spectrum. The story opens by describing a young boy, Sam, who has an infectious laugh, loves to play music on his cello, and lives more comfortably with routines. At school, the other students get annoyed by Sam's constant humming and tease him by taking away pieces of his puzzle so he can't finish it. Sam's parents begin to notice how Sam is different from other children his age and take him to the doctor. The doctor explains to Sam and his parents that he has Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of autism. As a team, Sam's parents, sister, teacher, and peers work together to understand Sam. At the end, Sam performs in the school concert and is fully accepted and supported by everyone. This book would be great to read to a class of young students because it explains how children with Asperger syndrome need extra support yet are very similar to everyone else. The book has great, colorful pictures and shows how students with differences such as Asperger's should be included in activities just like other students. If I knew that I was going to have a student with this disability, I would read this book to my class and openly discuss how being different isn't always easy, what things we could do to be sure that a student like Sam would feel welcomed in the class, and how to provide him with support if he becomes frustrated or upset. Especially helpful, in the back of the book is a list of 10 tips for interacting with a child with this disability which I would also go over with my class and remind them that supportive friends are the best friends.

Not only is Understanding Sam a well told story that captures attention by bringing a simplistic, yet effective and realistic understanding of Asperberger's syndrome to all; but also boasts absolutely brilliant, colorful and emotionally heart tugging illustrations. ---truly captivating and a most useful book in terms of fostering the kind of understanding, tolerance and acceptance we want to instil in our children and society as a whole.

As fresh and illuminating as any of Munro's previous collections; everything you want it to be and more

What can be said about Alice Munro's luminous writing that hasn't already been said? What unused plump adjectives might be bandied about to describe her way with words? What turn of phrase or simile might once again skirt the edge of capturing her unparalleled ability to so aptly describe those quiet moments in life that can change everything in a flash? Crossroads, they are called. A lightning bug trapped inside a jar, now free. Her latest collection, DEAR LIFE, is all of those flashy adjectives and overextended metaphors. It's everything you want it to be, and more.

Munro has written 12 other short story collections as well as a few volumes of selected previously published stories and one novel. You'd think with this many published stories in her back pocket that maybe she'd retrace her steps, write the same story but with different characters, rely on a well-tread formula or two for some of the "filler" in the book. But such is not the case. While many reoccurring themes are explored, DEAR LIFE is as fresh and illuminating as any of her previous collections, if not more so. As another reviewer so fittingly put it, "there are no clunkers here."

"To Reach Japan," the first entry in the collection, finds Greta and her young daughter Katy on a train to Toronto to housesit a friend's home for a month while Greta's husband --- and Katy's father --- begins a new job elsewhere. While on the journey, the normally quiet and contained Greta gets too deep in the drink with a younger fellow they meet on the train and, in a moment of lusty abandon, loses track of Katy. Of course, mother and daughter are reunited, but not without Greta feeling the full weight of what might have happened. Still, it doesn't stop her from kissing back when a newspaper columnist she met at a party a few months earlier greets her on the platform in Toronto. As the pins line up, there's plenty to noodle over in this brief glimpse into the life of a subconsciously unhinged mother possibly unhappy in her marriage, definitely looking for a change.

In "Leaving Maverley," Morgan, a half-curmudgeonly small town movie theater projectionist, and his doting wife take a wayward girl named Leah under their wing who, not long after, runs off with the minister's son. As is often the case in Munro's stories, time isn't kind to any of the three, doling out tragedy in droves. Leah's marriage fails, causing her to lose her children. But it's Morgan's loss of his wife (to cancer) that stings the most. "But the emptiness in place of her was astounding.... What he carried with him, all he carried with him, was a lack, something like a lack of air, of proper behavior in his lungs, a difficulty that he supposed would go on forever."

Tackling loss --- and blame --- from a different angle, "Gravel" is the story of two sisters who live in a ramshackle trailer by a water-filled quarry after their mother left their sturdy, boring father for a younger, wilder man. When one sister drowns in the gravel pit on the other's watch, there's no question who is to blame. Their mother, a little too wild? The boyfriend, too stoned to jump in and save her? Or the narrator who stood by, watching her sister drown? As you might expect, it's the dead sister's voice that calls out the strongest here: "Caro keeps running at the water and throwing herself in, as if in triumph, and I'm still caught, waiting for her to explain to me, waiting for the splash."

Death. Love. Loss. Guilt. Shame. Lust. Loneliness. It's all poured over the coals in the stories throughout DEAR LIFE. But here's the kicker. There's an unprecedented finale tacked on at the book's end. Here, 81-year-old Munro writes, "The final four works in this book are not quite stories. They form a separate unit, one that is autobiographical in feeling, though not, sometimes, entirely so in fact. I believe they are the first and last --- and the closest --- things I have to say about my own life." [!!!] While these selections show none of the careful kneading and precise crafting so present in her fiction, it's perhaps just that raw, messy stream-of-consciousness that makes them so interesting to read.

** As a reviewer's side note, here's a tip: If you have access to the Winter 2012 issue of Granta, pick it up. Why? Aside from the fact that it's a well-curated journal that highlights the latest and greatest stories from Literary Greats such as Munro, this particular issue includes a story entitled "In Sight of the Lake" that is also included in DEAR LIFE. Here, an aging woman who seems to be losing her memory embarks on a drive in search of an "Elderly Specialist." As one might expect, she loses her way and has difficulty finding the doctor's office. I won't spoil the ending, but suffice it to say, the ending in DEAR LIFE and the ending in Granta *aren't the same!* I'm not sure I've ever had the pleasure of being treated to two slightly dissimilar endings that resonate very differently on the palate. It's an exercise that not only shows readers the myriad paths a story could follow, but also Munro's writing process as well.

Interesting Collection With Added Autobiographical Material

Fans of Alice Munro will be very happy with her new collection of short stories. Those that are new to her writing would be better served by starting out with one of her earlier books as these stories are not all that typical of her writing and there is an autobiographical section in the back of the book.

Ms. Munro has published twelve collections of short stories and one novel. She is a winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Booker Award and the Lannan Literary Award. Her books have been translated into thirteen languages.

In the autobiographical section, there are tender remembrances of her past and her time with her familiy. 'Dear Life', the title story, is about her growing up. Her father started a business raising foxes and minks for their pelts. Eventually the business failed and her father went to work in a forgery. Her mother developed Parkinson's Disease when she was in her forties. The family did not realize that it was progressive and incurable. In 'The Eye', she writes about Sadie who helps out in their house. Alice and she develop a close bond. Sadie gets run over by a car on the way back from a dance when she is not yet twenty years old. This story explores the quality of their relationship.

One of the more powerful stories in the collection is 'Amundsen'. A teacher in a rural sanitarium for children with tuberculosis becomes engaged to a doctor who works there. Things don't progress as she hoped they would. 'Leaving Maverly' was my favorite story. Each night, a police officer drives a young woman of a very fundamentalist religious denomination home. One night she skips town. His own wife is very ill with serious heart disease and he ends up taking her to Toronto for care. The story is about hope turning to loss with no way of finding your way back. 'In Sight of The Lake' is about a woman looking for a doctor because of her memory loss. She finds that the world is a different place than she thought it was.

Late in the book, Ms. Munro states that "We say of some things that they can't be forgiven, or that we will never forgive ourselves. But we do - we do it all the time". This is a recurrent theme in her stories. We do things we hate, we end up hating ourselves but there is forgiveness eventually.

Most of the stories take place in rural areas of Canada and many of the them occur in earlier times. Few are contemporary. This is likely because Ms. Munro herself grew up in an earlier age than now.

She is the grande dame of short story writing and there is no one who can write a story as she can. We read, we get pulled in, and then we end up wondering, even at the end, what will happen next.

Simple Tales of Everyday Life

A series of simple tales of everyday life with no great drama foretold, but which still draw you into their captivating storyline.

Although each story seems to be plausible, the endings are left open for each person to ascribe as they see fit. In other words there is a great deal of ambiguity to how each of the characters' lives eventually end up.

The author uses the train as a mode of transportation to set the background scene for most of the stories as a unifying theme plus a certain amount of despair and hopelessness in almost every case. Each story has some amount of psychological, spiritual, and sexual nature to it without the use of a lot of 4-lettered words to describe the action.

Each short story is poignantly told with a certain amount of hopelessness in the manner of predestination reminiscent of some European writers as Jean Paul Sartre. Yet in Ms Munro's stories the reader can supply the ending they choose, as nothing is written in stone except for the helplessness of the main characters to change a predestined plan of some existential force.

With the aforementioned precautions noted, I would recommend this fine work of short stories with easily understandable language. Just remember this is not a feel good series of stories although entertaining and evocative of many aspects of human nature.

So much love to be had, so many apologies to make...

I really loved this book... Lori is a submissive who has devoted her love to a man, Jude. Their chemistry is undeniable and all consuming. But, Jude walks away from Lori, leaving her bereft, cold and lonely inside. In the two years since Jude disappeared without a word, Lori has redefined herself... she's moving on, she's in a relationship now where she's in control. Lori has opted to explore her dominant side, and has taken on a submissive of her own. All is well... until Jude walks back into her life, turning it upside down from the first minute. He's determined to get Lori back, he KNOWS that what they shared before he left is not dead. Lori is clearly wary to resume a relationship with Jude, but she knows she has to try. Lori puts her relationship with Margaret her submissive on hold and goes back to Jude to see what's left of their relationship. Well, sparks fly! And if you ever doubted that some people are just soul mates and there is nothing that would ever keep them apart, then this beautifully written story about second chances will make you a believer. Jude and Lori fit, they fill that spot within each other... you know, that spot somewhere in your chest, right beside your heart, where the love of your life resides. Their road is a bit rocky, but they are ironing things out. Until an unforeseen enemy emerges, putting Jude and even Lori in danger. Jude is well trained to handle the danger, and he fights to end his worst nightmare once and for all. But Jude has a hard time handling the fact that he couldn't protect Lori and he now feels she is better off without him. Without a word, he disappears again, once again shattering the poor girl's heart to pieces.

They get their HEA, but what a rollercoaster of emotions to get there. So much love to be had, so many apologies to make. This story truly moved me. I loved it so much!

Given he was a badass Army special ops guy responsible for taking down terrorist masterminds, the job came first. But when he walked out the door one day with no warning, he broke Lori’s heart with lies about how he didn’t love her anymore. For a man who didn’t think he’d make it home from his last mission, Jude thought that was the best way to leave his beloved sub.
Fast forward two years, Jude turns up and ruins now Domme Lori’s sexy scene at BDSM club Emergence. His arrival effectively destroys the year-long relationship Lori has had with her sub Margaret. An accepting Margaret even moves out of their shared home to give Lori time. But just when Jude thinks his past is over and he can start fresh with the woman he needs, his past rears its ugly head and threatens everything he holds dear. Will he make the right choices for everyone this time or muck it up as badly as the first?

Bound to Be Tested is a second chance romance featuring two emotionally scarred people pulled apart by duty. However there’s far more sex than romance in this story because the love never really went away for Lori and Jude. And the sex is definitely not vanilla. Fans of fulltime BDSM relationships will love this story.

I was interested in this book because the blurb said former sub Lori is a Domme when her ex Jude turns up in town again. That sounded like a recipe for some fireworks, and I love fireworks! Unfortunately Lori puts up a token fight when Jude takes over her shibari scene, and then she basically folds beneath his commanding voice…just as she does when he suggests they get back together on a trial basis. Her reason? No one has been able to make Lori feel a fraction of what Jude can, and that is a powerful motivator.

Jude doesn’t do much in the way of earning back Lori’s trust for the way he left apart from reinstating his domination over her. Instead Lori realizes she still loves him, always will, and will have to accept him the way he is—apologetic for leaving her yet unable to explain why he did it. She’s a far better, accepting woman than I could ever be, and that makes for an interesting read. It helps that Jude is a patient, firm Dom with some interesting techniques.

Bound to Be Tested is the third in the Emergence series and features characters from previous Emergence books. A reader new to the series can pick this up without feeling lost. There’s also an obvious setup for future books…one with Margaret for sure so be prepared to add some extra books to your wish list!

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a BDSM with a full-time D/s relationship and loads of sexy times with a hot military man who is more about pleasing his woman than himself, Bound to Be Tested is for you.

loved loved this
this had be hooked but I know the heroine at the begging seemed pushy. what happends when a man you were in love with comes back into your live after 2 years of disappearing with no word. He was you dom and you were his perfect sub. . You become a Dom with a sub that is a lady and right in the middle of your show , he just walks in and directs you . after the show you look for him and he has disappeared. Then all of a sudden he shows up the next day and starts making demands. he wants you back and gives you rules to follow. He also goes sees his best friend who happens to be part of your family and they have it out. Loved it they don't know that his is in the army an undercover one and he left before because he didn't expect to come back. He went to the middle east to kill a terrorist and he thought he did. . things are going great but after a while he gets weird calls and he feels like he is being watched at home . He gets a call from his Captin/ Superior that the terrorist is in the United States and they need to finish the Job . He drops the sub the love of his life back and he goes on his mission. lots of tricks happen and little does he know that the terrioist feel in love with his girlfriend who is his Heart and kidnapped her and played a trick on him . They find her in a shed near the factory he killed the terrorist and he finds her in the hospital. he feels like s*** and skips out on her . He is thinking that he has been on secreat missions and there will be always someone after him. He cant stand it .

The action audaciously ranges from penal settlements on the Andaman Islands to the suburban comfort of South London, and from the opium-fuelled violence of Agra Fort during the Indian ‘Mutiny’ to the cocaine-induced contemplation of Holmes’ own Baker Street.

This Broadview Edition places Doyle’s tale in the cultural, political, and social contexts of late nineteenth-century colonialism and imperialism. The appendices provide a wealth of relevant extracts from hard-to-find sources, including official reports, memoirs, newspaper editorials, and anthropological studies.

Oh my gosh....AMAZING

What starts out as a small meeting with an unknown man turns into a murder mystery for Sherlock Holmes. I don't like to spoil endings, but let me say this: if you think the book is boring at first, don't stop reading: there is a TON of action towards the end.

Mixed quality-- But some excellent stories can be found.

I purchased this book in part on the strength of three 5-star reviews on this site. This is a very handsome hardcover volume at a surprisingly reasonable price.
There are three classifications of stories in the book. First, stories primarily written by Adrian Conan Doyle, with some input from JD Carr. Second, two stories written almost entirely by Mr. Carr, possibly with some slight input from Doyle. Third, six stories written solely by Mr. Adrian Doyle.
Since I have read a number of mysteries by Carr, and expected much, I was most disappointed to find his two stories the weakest in the book. In one instance, after reading the first page I was able to anticipate the entire plot. In the other case, I simply found the story flat, uninteresting, and narrowly derivative of similar stories in the original Holmes canon.
To the contrary, some of the stories by Mr. Doyle cannot be praised enough. One that's typical, "The Adventure of Foulkes Rath," seems up to the work of Arthur Conan Doyle himself. All in all, Adrian Doyle admirably captures the style and brooding Gothic tone that so typifies many of the best stories in the original Holmes canon. Moreover, Adrian Doyle's stories have a kind of life and warmth that brings the Edwardian world alive for the reader.
I would give the book five stars were it not for a few tales that seem off the pace, and decidedly inferior to the others. Alas-- and surprisingly-- these are from JD Carr's pen. Perhaps Carr tried too diligently to write an impeccably logical mystery, where nothing in the denoument was not well provided for in the early story. The effect, unfortunately, was to create a mechanical kind of plot, which made it all to easy for the reader to anticipate too accurately the entire unfolding of the story.
So in this interesting and generally worthwhile book of tales, we might have the amateur outwriting the old master.
All in all, a worthwhile purchase -- and handsome book with great bedtime reading at a very reasonable price.

The best post-ACD collection of Holmes short stories.

Patrick Callahan's excellent review is right on the money, but I'm giving this little book four stars anyway just because, when it's good, it's _very_ good. Some of the stories contained herein -- based on Watson's occasional references to unrecorded (not "unsolved", as the current edition's subtitle incorrectly has it) cases -- surpass some of the elder Doyle's later works. Highly recommended, especially as an antidote to the surfeit of "pastiches" that can't seem to get any of the details right.

Adrian Conan Doyle (with or without John Dickson Carr) tells a straight no-frills tale very much in the spirit of the Sherlockian canon; Holmes doesn't wind up getting married, Watson doesn't turn out to be the real Holmes, et cetera, et cetera. And there are no attempts to link Holmes to fabulous ripped-from-the-headlines figures like Dracula or Jack the Ripper -- these are perfectly ordinary cases of the kind in which Holmes himself was known to delight for their own sake owing to their touch of the _outre_ and the singular features they presented to the reasoner. Solid stuff despite the weaknesses of a few of the tales.

If you want a couple of novel-length pastiches to go with it, I recommend Nicholas Meyer's first two: _The Seven Per Cent Solution_ and _The West End Horror_.
