Sandra McKay is Professor Emeritus of English at San Francisco State University. "A Must-Own For All"

As a man the most important sex act is masturbation. It is the safest and most performed sex act we all do. The author writes very intelligently in how to achieve orgasm the best possible way while at the same time informing his readers that masturbation is nothing to feel ashamed about.

Different techniques here are discussed, everything from the best time of day to masturbate to achieving the ultimate orgasm. Not only is this book for gay men, but for all men.

Stephan Niederwieser opens windows again...

Stephan Niederwieser continues his entertaining and educational series of book that celebrate the physicality of the human body with this latest offering - DO IT YOURSELF: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MASTURBATION. His previous two books 'BEND OVER!: The Complete Guide to Anal Sex for Men! and BLOW ME!: The Complete Guide to Oral Sex! Have been best sellers since their release and the books, though unapologetically for the gay market, have found a significant audience among women. The facts that Niederwieser about those `behind closed doors' subjects are universal and likely if everyone took advantage of these books from puberty to way past middle age there would be fewer insecurities about body concept and prowess and more satisfaction in learning the whats and hows of gratification.

The book opens with the now expected Niederwieser skillful writing technique of combining history, anatomy, technical aspects and personal preferences with wit and charm. He offers a discussion about the derivation of the word masturbation and all of its synonyms such as onanism, and autosexuality to spanking the monkey and wanking and in doing so he not only informs but he also entertains.

Perceptions and self image are addressed in a section on healthful issues and once that information is transmitted the remainder of the book is a panopoly of ideas, suggestions, and variations so wide in range that even the most practiced and experienced of men will discover new concepts. Niederwieser again offers all of this information with sound judgment an always with quick witty asides. The book is peppered with some outstanding photographs by such luminaries as Henning von Berg, Giovanni, Ohm Phanphiroj, Peter Minx and others that serve as illustration. No new information! The author doesn't tell any more than anyone wouldn't already know from a basic high school sex class. It seemed written for teenage boys, not for anyone over the age of 20! Could have been a lot more about tantric sexual masturbation and other less known techniques!

simple but powerful memory techniques

Awesome Awesome Awesome~

I have many books on tube amp and preamp design. From Reich's "Theory and Applications of Electron Tubes" 1940's EE text book, to hi-fi books published by Elektor to Richard Kuehnel's diatribes on the classic tube guitar amps.

This book smokes them ALL. It is so easy to read, and accessible to anyone with high-school math skills, and technician level electronics knowledge. If you can read an electronics schematic, know how to wire/solder and can make stuff, then you can very quickly and practically apply the work in this book with great results.

Biasing, Triode, Tetrode and Pentode operations are all well addressed, with practical graphical and analytical design techniques given, as well as clear, inarguable technically correct explanations of distortion, overdrive, harmonics, tone control and filtering.

I can say this because I am an EE, with many years experience designing and building audio electronics both for guitar and hi-fi, and I could not have written a book on this subject better myself.

Great Book !

I have a degree in EE, and took courses in networks, filter theory, transistor theory, signals and systems, electromagnetics, etc. Although I have these theories and methods tucked neatly away, in college you are instructed in a dry textbook format, with almost no instruction how to apply this knowledge in a practical way. Such knowledge comes from having a job and gaining experience.

I have mainly designed and build precision amplifier circuits for optical sensors using semiconductor op-amps. As I now approach retirement I recently became interested in the design of vacuum tube amplifiers for guitars. I'll start out by saying this is the finest book on tube amplifier design I've seen, and is a goldmine for electronic designers in general. First, the Author presents vacuum tube design and theory in a thorough and lucid way. I read a few other books before this one, and this book answers all of the lingering questions I had from the previous books. Then the Author presents specifically how tube guitar amplifiers are designed, what makes them sound the way they do, what the limitations are, etc. Then he goes on to provide a whole grab bag of tricks used by veteran designers in the old vintage amplifiers.

I'm ready to start designing and building my first valve amplifier, purely for the fun of it. This is the best book on the subject I have seen. It is easily worth the money regardless of your level of knowledge at the start. A textbook with 1/4 the information will cost you 4x more than this. He'll teach you everything you need to get started, and give you a real appreciation of how real EEs design stuff. And remember: "You can't spell Geek without a Double-E"

An indispensible reference

Blencowe's Preamp book is one of the very few exceptionally clear references available for valve preamp circuits. There's no math beyond high school algebra and his treatment of pentode gain stages is better than any other you'll find not written for electrical engineers. The book's title suggests it's only applicable to guitar amplifiers but that's not exactly true. Although the discussion centers on guitar amps Blencowe notes the difference between guitar and hi-fi applications throughout. While he does not emphasize minimizing distortion in gain stages (usually describing various types of distortion as desirable for guitar) he does clearly express the difference one would find in a similar hi-fi circuit.
To gain a preview of the book Google "valve wizard" (Merlin - valve wizard - get it?) - summaries of the major subjects are available there. As to spelling and grammar - an earlier reviewer might not understand that the author is British - he writes in British not American English.

This biography tells the story of one of the most influential figures of the twelfth century, Eleanor of Aquitaine, successively queen of France and of England. Her marriage at fifteen to the young Louis VII was later annulled on the grounds of consanguinity. After her divorce, she married Henry II, then Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy. Henry became king of England in 1154 and Eleanor thereby became queen of potentially the most powerful leader in Europe, whose empire stretched from the Scottish borders to the Pyrenees.

Eleanor bore Henry eight children, two of them future kings of England - Richard (the Lionheart) and John. Her behavior and political motives have always been open to question, not least her siding with her children against Henry. Although their revolt collapsed, Eleanor was kept in close custody in England for much of the next sixteen years. Then, after Henry's death, she lent her unflagging support to his successors Richard and, later, John.

In tracing Eleanor's life story, Professor Owen examines her part in public affairs during the reigns of Louis, Henry, Richard and John, and her role as a literary and cultural patron at the time of the great intellectual revival know as the Twelfth-Century Renaissance. Even in her own day, Eleanor caught the imagination of chroniclers and other writers. Professor Owen follows the development of the legend that built up around her life and considers her possible use as a role-model in the epic and romance of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

Eleanor of Aquitaine: beauty and warts, but no fluff

The late D.D.R. Owen was Professor Emeritus of French at Scotland's University of St. Andrews. He had acquired the languages, the deep cultural knowledge and the scholar's discipline that equipped him to compose a fine, restrained biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Owen's treatment is careful to draw a line between rumor and fact (insofar as that line can be drawn more than eight centuries later). He exposes rumors, plays them down and turns his attention to accenting history.

Eleanor was a patron and sponsor of troubadours at her many courts. Verses and songs in her praise inevitably fueled the whiff of scandal. Her enemies' verses and whisperings, her larger than life character and the written records of tut-tutting clerics from Paris to Antioch all darkened her record. Owen set himself the task of rubbing away the grime of ages to expose the life at the core. His account of Eleanor's limitations and excesses is no less interesting for that. Thus he can show more clearly than most how much authority this amazing woman did, or did not, exercise through sixty-seven years during which she counseled, provoked or scorned four kings, two of them her husbands, two of them her sons.

Owen's "Eleanor of Aquitaine: Queen and Legend" is the book for readers who want their Eleanor, beauty, warts and all, but shorn of celebrity fluff. In that sense it complements Bonnie Wheeler's and John Parsons' "Eleanor of Aquitaine: Lord and Lady." Both books offer scholarly approaches. They are well matched in presenting well-crafted interpretations of violent, turbulent, very strange times, with a strong-willed queen presiding.

An enjoyable biography

I found a second hand edition of this book after seeing it referenced in some other works on Eleanor of Aquitaine. It is eminently readable, particularly as Owen is not above filling in the gaps with his own inferences and imaginings. Having said that, he is careful to draw the line between fact and his own fiction, but one does need to read with attention to be sure of noticing the distinction.

I would perhaps have preferred to see more extensive referencing where he does state fact - sometimes it feels like you're just expected to take his word for it. I would have liked to know when he was drawing on primary sources and when he was stating commonly assumed facts. For example, he states that King John was born at Oxford as a matter of fact, with no reference, although I have recently read elsewhere that this is not actually an indisputable fact.

The book also traces the development of various myths, legends and literature associated with Eleanor - Rosamund Clifford, the Amazon Crusaders, Courts of Love etc, beginning by establishing what contemporary evidence exists (if any) for these, and then how they have been built upon, and even accepted as fact by subsequent historians.

Over all, an interesting and enjoyable read, but those of a more scholarly inclination might benefit from reading some more recent scholarship on the subject, such as Ralph Turner's biography "Eleanor of Aquitaine: Queen of France, Queen of England" as well as the collection of essays mentioned by an earlier reviewer - "Eleanor of Aquitaine: Lord and Lady", which may help to sort fact from fiction or conjecture.

Compelling arguments in favor of opening up the educational supply-side in American public schools

Carl Bistany is an outstanding educator, (the book is co-written with journalist Stephanie Buckley). He’s a man with a big heart who I’ve had the privilege of observing over a period of time as he wrestled with the problem of improving educational opportunity in some of the world’s difficult places, including in Iraq, inner-city America and of course his native Lebanon. This book focuses on the American situation; it is his impassioned plea to open up the supply side in American public education, to the greater benefit of underprivileged children.

The argument is compelling: there is a ‘gridlock’ in educational reform in America which leaves many of the most disadvantaged children stuck in failing schools, deprived of the educational opportunities from which they could benefit (Chapter 1). There is a way forward, through charter schools, a route that the evidence shows is beneficial to the most disadvantaged (Chapter 4 highlights this evidence). But politics gets in the way of beneficial reform, with those in power and, especially, the teacher unions, opposed to charter school reform (chapter 5). Moreover, there are ‘hurdles and roadblocks’ against properly opening up the supply side, with many against for-profit providers in particular (Chapter 3); but why in a ‘time of crisis’ would anyone want to ‘limit our options’ and stifle innovation and entrepreneurship in education, especially that which benefits the disadvantaged? (Chapter 2).

Given the ‘many challenges’ that create hurdles to entrepreneurs entering the public school sector in America, ‘you might rightly ask why entrepreneurs bother at all?’ (p. 73). Optimistically, the authors point out that these hurdles can be overcome, at least ‘when the stars are aligned’ (Chapter 7); the final chapter outlines policy recommendations that could make this happen more often (Chapter 9). This includes the ‘ACT SMART’ acronym, because the charter school movement needs a ‘rallying cry’ (p. 141).

The tone of the book is optimistic and upbeat throughout, even when some of the stories told have clearly tested the optimism of those involved at the heart of the process. For instance, the opening story is of the SABIS charter school in Springfield, Mass., where the company wanted to take over the worst performing school in the district but was eventually allowed to take over the second worst performer. I’ve been to the school myself: it is now one of the best schools I’ve seen anywhere in the world. It deserves its genuine waiting list of 3,000 students (confirmed each term to check that parents really are still interested). Yet when SABIS applied for another charter in nearby Brockton, Mass, they were turned down – the struggle is reported in Chapter 5 on ‘Politics and power plays’.

The political inhibitions against companies like SABIS trying to operate under such conditions inevitably cripples the supply side and leads to huge levels of unmet demand. For instance, in 2013, ‘charter schools in Illinois received almost 30,000 more applications than they had seats to grant’ (p. 51). In Massachusetts, the supply is so limited by the state cap that there are 45,000 students on charter school waiting lists. Nationwide it is more than 600,000. This is huge untapped demand that those in power are determined to thwart. Even when, as the authors point out, the ‘people most vehemently opposed to school choice rarely have children in failing schools’ (p. 71). Indeed, many have their own children in private schools, or have paid significantly to have their homes in the catchment areas of high quality schools. It is the poor who suffer failing schools. Through writing this book, Bistany seeks to challenge this stark unfairness.

It seems an uphill struggle, and if anyone deserves to win it, it will be people like Bistany. But is it a winnable struggle? Here there is an unanswered question for me. Could a company like SABIS also consider creating ultra low-cost private schools to help meet the frustrated demand on charter school waiting lists? This would be a route that also brings in the ‘T” of the ACT SMART acronym, ‘Turn to the free market’. Yes, energetically pursue the charter school route and succeed where this is feasible. But why not explore this other free market route too? It may also be a good way forward for committed educators like Carl Bistany, who seek improved educational opportunities for all, including those most disadvantaged by the current system.

Not worth the money!

A collection of off-the-wall junk translated mostly from the Don Army and published at a HUGE price for the value you get. Very little military information, mostly behind the scenes correspondence. Should be free with a hair-cut.
