Eighty-two percent of German boys and girls between the ages of ten and eighteen belonged to Hitlerjugend--Hitler Youth--or one of its affiliates by the time membership became fully compulsory in 1939. These adolescents were recognized by the SS, an exclusive cadre of Nazi zealots, as a source of future recruits to its own elite ranks, which were made up largely of men under the age of thirty. In this book, Gerhard Rempel examines the special relationship that developed between these two most youthful and dynamic branches of the National Socialist movement and concludes that the coalition gave nazism much of its passionate energy and contributed greatly to its initial political and military success.

Rempel center his analysis of the HJ-SS relationship on two branches of the Hitler Youth. The first of these, the Patrol Service, was established as a juvenile police force to pursue ideological and social deviants, political opponents, and non-conformists within the HJ and among German youth at large. Under SS influence, however, membership in the organization became a preliminary apprenticeship for boys who would go on to be agents and soldiers in such SS-controlled units as the Gestapo and Death's Head Formations. The second, the Land Service, was created by HJ to encourage a return to farm living. But this battle to reverse "the flight from the land" took on military significance as the SS sought to use the Land Service to create "defense-peasants" who would provide a reliable food supply while defending the Fatherland.

The transformation of the Patrol and Land services, like that of the HJ generally, served SS ends at the same time that it secured for the Nazi regime the practical and ideological support of Germany's youth. By fostering in the Hitler Youth as "national community" of the young, the SS believed it could convert the popular movement of nazism into a protomilitary program to produce ideologically pure and committed soldiers and leaders who would keep the movement young and vital.

Bund Deutsche Madel

There have been a wide range of materials written on the nazi youth movement, but the vast majority tend to focus almost exclusively on the male Hilter Jugend. However, "Hitler's Children" has a fairly reasonable discussion of the Bund Deutsche Madel for girls as well. Among other things, it focusses on the girls' involvement in farming to help with the war effort.
Another main subject is the involvement of the SS with the Hitler youth for indoctrination and recruiting purposes, as well as espionage. There is some discussion of the leaders of the Hitler youth, although it does not really get extensively biographical. There is also a fair amount of coverage of the involvement of the Hitler youth in military activities (air raid fire brigades and digging anti-tank trenches towards the end). This book also has the only detailed discussion I have seen of the conflicts between the Hitler youth and the broad spectrum of other youth groups (communist, religious, middle class, etc.).

The prominence of finite mixture modelling is greater than ever. Many important statistical topics like clustering data, outlier treatment, or dealing with unobserved heterogeneity involve finite mixture models in some way or other. The area of potential applications goes beyond simple data analysis and extends to regression analysis and to non-linear time series analysis using Markov switching models.

For more than the hundred years since Karl Pearson showed in 1894 how to estimate the five parameters of a mixture of two normal distributions using the method of moments, statistical inference for finite mixture models has been a challenge to everybody who deals with them. In the past ten years, very powerful computational tools emerged for dealing with these models which combine a Bayesian approach with recent Monte simulation techniques based on Markov chains. This book reviews these techniques and covers the most recent advances in the field, among them bridge sampling techniques and reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo methods.

It is the first time that the Bayesian perspective of finite mixture modelling is systematically presented in book form. It is argued that the Bayesian approach provides much insight in this context and is easily implemented in practice. Although the main focus is on Bayesian inference, the author reviews several frequentist techniques, especially selecting the number of components of a finite mixture model, and discusses some of their shortcomings compared to the Bayesian approach.

The aim of this book is to impart the finite mixture and Markov switching approach to statistical modelling to a wide-ranging community. This includes not only statisticians, but also biologists, economists, engineers, financial agents, market researcher, medical researchers or any other frequent user of statistical models. This book should help newcomers to the field to understand how finite mixture and Markov switching models are formulated, what structures they imply on the data, what they could be used for, and how they are estimated. Researchers familiar with the subject also will profit from reading this book. The presentation is rather informal without abandoning mathematical correctness. Previous notions of Bayesian inference and Monte Carlo simulation are useful but not needed.

Sylvia Frühwirth-Schnatter is Professor of Applied Statistics and Econometrics at the Department of Applied Statistics of the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. She received her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Technology in Vienna in 1988. She has published in many leading journals in applied statistics and econometrics on topics such as Bayesian inference, finite mixture models, Markov switching models, state space models, and their application in marketing, economics and finance.

Solid, complete, and practical - superb reading!

This is by far the most complete treatment of markov switching modeling. Each chapter would lead you to a fulfilling experience. The book is technical but written in a way that is relatively easy to read and highly practical. The codes are written in Matlab, not necessarily something that everyone uses, but users could convert them to other languages. Overall, the book is simply awesome!

This is a very good book for Finite Mixture Modelling. Clear and comprehensive. I have done a large scale of literature review in this area and found this is definitely one of the best understandable materials. It is much better than the work by Marin, J.M., Mengersen, K. and Robert, C.P, which is very dry and confusing to me.

My criteria for a book are: 1. it is not confusing at the beginning; 2. it answers your question immediately when you get one; 3. when you read it again you always understand a bit more. This book has done 1 and 3 very well and 2 well.

The only disappointing point is that the author did not give the matlab code as she promised in the appendix and her website. This is a bit unacceptable.

I thought this was a great continuation to Cordina's Royal Family and was glad to find it as I was sad for the series to end. I had to send to the UK for this one because I could not find it in the USA as with Cordina's Royal Family but it was worth the wait. The book had a great plot and was well written. Its about a young princess trying to make her mark on the world and trying to find herself among all of her royal duties. In doing so she finds true love and a passion for a new past time. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.

The facts that Niederwieser about those `behind closed doors' subjects are universal and likely if everyone took advantage of these books from puberty to way past middle age there would be fewer insecurities about body concept and prowess and more satisfaction in learning the whats and hows of gratification.

The book opens with the now expected Niederwieser skillful writing technique of combining history, anatomy, technical aspects and personal preferences with wit and charm. He offers a discussion about the derivation of the word masturbation and all of its synonyms such as onanism, and autosexuality to spanking the monkey and wanking and in doing so he not only informs but he also entertains.

Perceptions and self image are addressed in a section on healthful issues and once that information is transmitted the remainder of the book is a panopoly of ideas, suggestions, and variations so wide in range that even the most practiced and experienced of men will discover new concepts. Niederwieser again offers all of this information with sound judgment an always with quick witty asides. Toys, medications for erectile dysfunction, possibilities for increasing size and different cultural additives are discussed along with a give and take sections of questions about performance and negation of guilt.

The book is peppered with some outstanding photographs by such luminaries as Henning von Berg, Giovanni, Ohm Phanphiroj, Peter Minx and others that serve as illustration. It is a pleasure to read a book that discusses a universal topic with such verve. AND, should women care to discover some more of men's secrets, this book is full of them. Grady Harp, April 12

Boreing/no new information

No new information! The author doesn't tell any more than anyone wouldn't already know from a basic high school sex class. It seemed written for teenage boys, not for anyone over the age of 20! Could have been a lot more about tantric sexual masturbation and other less known techniques!
