A standard text for database designers and programmers, Database: Principles, Programming, and Performance is out in a new edition. This latest version of the detailed work of the O'Neils includes a new chapter on Object-Relational Structured Query Language (SQL) and its implementations in Oracle and Informix products. On top of that, the authors have revised their chapters on basic and advanced SQL, and added product-specific details (particularly having to do with Oracle, Informix, and IBM DB2 database products) to most areas of their coverage. As a result of these revisions, this book does a great job of balancing academic material with practical examples.

Furthermore, this book does a good job of straddling the schism that's begun to open up in the world of database architecture. Perhaps better than any other volume, this book documents the emerging object-relational strategy for representing data fairly, although most of the authors' coverage (as is fitting) goes to the more firmly established and better-supported relational database model. The authors' style intersperses sequences of theory-oriented prose and diagrams with queries and other listings that have to do with specific implementations, allowing readers to observe many of the phenomena described here. This book is a fine picture of the state of the art, painted with influences from business as well as information science. --David Wall

A book for the lowest common denominator Oracle aspirer

Damning Factors:

1) The book completely ignores that there are other DB's than Oracle, DB2, and Informix. No MySQL, no PosgreSQL, no SQLite, no CouchDB (okay, PostgreSQL gets a 1 paragraph head nod on page 177).

2) This book is made for the lowest possible set of people who might be interested in the subject. If you have any knowledge, or are decently intuitive, then you'll tear your hair out with this book.

For example, if you know any programming, you realize that primitive variables (ie int) always have a value. In the DB, though, they can be null (meaning there is no value), so a primitive int cannot represent all values the DB may store. To accommodate this, you submit a second variable, essentially a boolean to hold whether or not the value is null. Pretty straight forward, right? I figured it out in the first paragraph of the section, but 5 paragraphs later they still hadn't gotten around to saying it. I looked at the code example, it fit my conclusion, so then I tried to skim the massive quantity of text to try and find where they said it, to verify my intuition. It took me several minutes, because they split it across several paragraphs.

That is the problem with this book, really. It is verbose, it is tedious, there is so much text, and even if you know what you want, and you know where the book talks about it, you still have a lot of difficulty getting that information out of the book.

Maybe if you were brand new to programming, brand new to databases, had very little intuition, and really needed to read every paragraph, this would be a good book. But if you're really in that boat, shouldn't you spend some time learning about programming first?

As a result of this writing style, **IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO USE THIS BOOK AS A REFERENCE**

3) They spend a lot of time talking about Relational Algebra, which is a complete waste of time since it is purely academic, noone actually uses it. On top of that, switching mindsets from Relational Algebra to SQL is a bit rough, because you approach querying in very different ways, thus you must think about the problem in very different ways (it's like those video games where you eat the bad mushroom that switches your keys to the opposite directions). But the most annoying thing is that they talk about it like it's super complicated, but all it is is set theory. If they said "it's set theory, the same thing you learned in discrete math, here's the syntax" then they could have dispensed with it in a week, but because it's aimed at the lowest common denominator, it drug on for a month.

4) This book approaches writing programs that deal with the DB in a poor way, IMO. They use C, a static language that can't anticipate run-time differences, and would require a huge amount of infrastructure to even be able to comprehend your schema (the structure of your DB). To get around this, they use an absolutely wretched bug-ridden code generator called PRO*C, which needs to nanny your entire application in order to work right, extremely limiting. C is a completely horrible language for this type of application, something even halfway dynamic would have been infinitely better, and something object oriented seems almost necessary. My group of 3 members spent over 80 hours in a period of two extremely frustrating days trying to get PRO*C to work correctly (almost 15 hours each day of misery), before we finally decided to abandon the book / instructor's approach, and switch languages / frameworks altogether.

5) The thing is seriously enormous. After a while I quit bringing it to school with me, because it would make my shoulder ache carrying it in my bag.

Redeeming Factors:

1) There were a large number of examples. They weren't always good examples, usually they didn't show what I needed (too simple), but there were quite a few, which was something at least.

2) They showed the EBNF of the SQL statements, which most of the time, between the EBNF and the simplistic examples was enough for me to figure out how to do what I was wanting to do, if not, a little experimenting / googling to supplement the book.

3) There really is a lot of information in there. It's hard to get out of the book, and it will take way longer than it should to learn, but it seems to hit a fairly significant portion of relevant information.

Wordy, redundant, tedious, still a good coverage

I agree that this book could be well resumed in 300 pages. Too much text, too few figures. For instance, when you make a classification or an enumeration of things that have long definitions, it is a good idea to organize them in a bullet-list or numbered list or something similar, instead of just plain text. If you constanly fail to use such synthetic representations, the result is made of large chunks of plain text, hard to read, tedious, redundant.
Also, you can use more visual indicators that give you an instant information about various pieces of text: bold text, spaces, various font sizes and shapes, icons, etc, so that the reader can focus on particular sections of such a big book. They call it Readability, and it's far from being great here.
There are also some points left unfinished: when you read "The first idea would be to...", you expect that the second idea follows sometime. Well, there are exceptions in this book.
I like the idea of mixing theory with industry examples in the same book, but please make a clear separation. Sometimes I can't say whether a particular sentence refers to such a real system or it is a theoretical statement.
In conclusion, this book features a good coverage of the subject but also a lack of organization and readability.

A book you'll keep as a reference

After looking at the books used by the local LA Universities and Colleges to teach the subject, I felt very sad for the CS, and IT students of these schools. Lectures are one thing, having a good textbook is the other. It's the great textbook that doesn't go back for a refund after the quarters over. All I could find where books on Access programming. "Learn Access in 21 days", just does not do justice to Normalization theory. Books on SQL seem only to rehash syntax and provide the occasional example. I looked all over for a book that hit on the important topics a programmer, DB Analysts, or DB Administrator needs to know independent of the platform. Ample theory is presented here in an understandable way so those key concepts can be used to develop solutions to real world problems.

About the Author
Robert Tittler is Professor of History at Concordia University. He is co-founder and Chair of the Montreal British History Seminar and Chair of the Executive Board of Records of Early English Drama.

Roger Zelazny (1937-1995) was a wizard of the pen: he won six Hugos and three Nebulas and is revered by science fiction and fantasy readers. Lord Demon is his last novel, the second of two projects unfinished at his death. Jane Lindskold, his partner and a fantasy author herself, completed it from some manuscript, a few notes, and conversations she'd had with him. Fans are often skeptical of posthumous collaborations: "It's not real Zelazny"--but Lord Demon comes darned close. It deserves space beside the Amber series, The Dream Master, and Lord of Light. As Zelazny once said of another novel: "It has all my favorite things--blood, love, fire, hate and a high ideal or two."

Lord Demon is vintage Zelazny: a "scientific" fantasy built on favorite themes (the necessity of knowing oneself, of taking risks, and of accepting the vulnerability that comes with feeling passionately), drawing on East Asian, Irish, and hero's quest myths, and featuring his signature protagonist: erudite, smart-mouthed, detached, homicidal when roused but more often immersed in art, poetry, and the creation of alternate realities; unexpectedly kind to the weak and deeply romantic in his approach to women. Zelazny left two novel manuscripts unfinished when he died in 1995. One was Donnerjack, which Lindskold (Brother to Dragons, etc.) completed for 1998 publication. This is the second. Zelazny is best known for characters who, in between waging interdimensional battles and building planets, still have time to be very human. Lord Demon, also called Kai Wren, and sometimes Godslayer, follows that familiar model. Once the greatest of his kind, Kai, along with the other demons, was banished from their homeland 5000 years ago by the gods. The demons found a way to Earth, specifically China, where they rebuilt their lives. For the last few millennia, Kai has withdrawn from demon society, focused on constructing splendid magical bottles infused with his chi. Now his human servant and best friend has been murdered. Assuming the crime is merely one born of an old grudge, Kai doesn't take it too seriously. That is, until he's betrayed and stripped of his ability to manipulate chi energyAreducing him to the merely human in a new war among demonkind. Fighting back means dangerous alliances and sticking his neck out as he hasn't done for thousands of years. Most dangerous of all, however, is the possibility that Kai is just a pawn in a plot that passed him by years ago. Though the novel is slow to get moving, once the fight is on, it doesn't let up. The narrative weaves a fine line between tragedy and humor, sometimes slapstick, as Kai gathers a ragtag band of Chinese sorcerers and shape changers and Pekinese dogs. Lindskold effectively captures the voices of Zelazny's wise-cracking characters and continues the expert blending of magical and mundane that makes his work so enjoyable. Final treasure from the Lord of Light

I was a bit surprised to read some of the scathing comments that other reviewers have posted about "Lord Demon," and from the general trend of these reviews I suppose myself to be among the minority of Zelazny fans who thoroughly enjoyed this book. So be it. "Lord Demon" was fresh and original Zelazny fiction, full of warmth and wit and all of the other goodness that readers have come to expect from this master of letters. Zelazny was never an author to churn out endless carbon-copy reworks of the same tired themes, and once again he succeeded in breaking out of his own mold when he wrote this book. In fact, I suspect that many of the negative reviews about "Lord Demon" are rooted in the fact that this novel, like so much of Zelazny's fiction, is completely different from anything else that he's ever written. This book is not "Nine Princes In Amber," which is appropriate enough since Zelazny already has a book by that name!

Kai Wren is something of a self-imposed exile among demon-kind, concentrating most of his time and energy on the creation of fabulous (and potently magical) art glass. When a beloved human servitor is murdered by lowly "scrub" demons, however, Lord Demon's thirst for vengeance draws the lonely recluse back into demonic society and politics.

Yes, the reader sees much of what is coming long before Kai Wren catches on. Big deal. The story is told primarily from Kai Wren's perspective-- that is, from the perspective of an ancient and powerful being, confident in his own immortality and therefore blinded by arrogance-- so it shouldn't be too surprising that the reader often sees things that Lord Demon is incapable of comprehending, for all of his terrible power and ancient wisdom. The author's POINT is that Kai Wren is maddeningly overconfident and frequently underestimates his foes. Of course Kai Wren is oblivious to things that would come instinctively to lesser beings! When you, the reader, see Kai Wren walking blindly into danger, it adds depth to his character and heightens the novel's suspense. In fact, professional writers even have a name for this type of literary device: "foreshadowing."

I also see many reviews complaining about the "planes of hangers and socks." Ridiculous, yes, but also vintage Zelazny humor! I have a feeling that these reviewers haven't read much other Zelazny fiction, for his sense of humor always tended to run toward the absurd-- one of my favorite Zelazny short stories, "Unicorn Variations," is about beer-swilling, chess-playing mythical beings, and who could forget the 'Alice in Wonderland' bar scene from Zelazny's 'Amber' series? Personally, I thought The Walker's one-line explanation of the hangars and socks was hilarious, and a single quote from a novel hasn't made me laugh out loud like this in a long, long time!

Is "Lord Demon" Zelazny's best novel? Probably not. But Roger Zelazny's genius was such that even his second-tier efforts tower above most other fantasy and sci fi yarns! With "Lord Demon," Roger Zelazny delivered exactly what his fans have come to expect: a well-told tale about extremely human characters, told with wit and warmth, and offering a touching lesson or two along the way. You may even see a reflection of your own mortality in the dark eyes of Kai Wren-- Lord Demon.

A Last, Lingering Taste of Roger Zelany

"Lord Demon" is, I understand, the final posthumous book of the great Roger Zelazny, completed by his friend and companion Jane Lindskold. It is a novel which fits well within the classic Zelazny mold, set in a world of the quasi-rationalized supernatural. This time the mythological background is Chinese, but I think if you did a DNA analysis of "Lord Demon" you would find strains of "Lord of Light" and probably "Jack of Shadows" in its ancestry. I would not select it as among the very best of his works -- Zelazny's best are dazzling -- but "Lord Demon" is fun to read and the usual Zelazny themes are dancing around. If you're a Zelazny fan, I think you will like it. And if you have never read him before ... well, it's not a bad introduction at all.

Kite, With Broken String

Zelazny was one of the field's premier science fiction and fantasy writers from the mid-sixties to the nineties, giving us some truly unique visions and always told in his own voice, a voice colored around the edges by cynicism and a touch of humor, but mainly couched in a sense of legend and archetype. This book begins in very typical Zelazny fashion, introducing us to the world of literal demons, mainly drawn from Chinese legends. And the introduction will grab you; its setting and concept are very well drawn and captivating.
The story is told from the point of view of Kai Wren, also known as Lord Demon and the Godslayer, so named as the only demon to ever defeat a god in their long running war. But as we meet him, we find an artisan and something of a hermit, who has spent the last 120 years designing and fashioning a magical bottle, who has feelings for his human servant (something demons aren't supposed to have). When his servant is murdered by some scrub demons during a routine run to Earth for pizza, Kai is galvanized to action, first to obtain revenge on the perpetrators, and later, as just who the real brains behind the murder becomes more and more of a puzzle, he finds himself working as an investigator, slowly developing friendships with other humans and demons as he gathers information.
If the starting scenario had been consistently carried through the entire book, this might have been a very good novel. Unfortunately, after about page 70 or so, it deteriorates into very ordinary developments, as the demons are more and more portrayed as having very human qualities and vices and several rather pointless additions are made to the initial idea. The old idea of alternate universes accessed by 'gates' becomes one of the main plot movers (even if a couple of these universes are populated by hangers and socks its still not very original), most of the 'gods' are only sketchily drawn and seem remarkably weak to be gods, and most of the 'puzzle' the average reader will figure out long before Kai Wren does. The final battle is certainly not Zelazny in his prime, as it is a complete cop-out, a retreat to 'this is fantasy, anything goes', and will severely disappoint the reader.
I don't know whether the above problems are those of Zelazny not having time before his death to completely flesh out his story idea and correct perceived problems or are those of having the novel completed by Jane Lindskold with her own ideas that don't mesh very well with Zelazny's original concept. But the net result, while still very readable and good for some mild entertainment, does not compare to the marvelous tales an earlier Zelazny gave us, from Lord of Light and This Immortal to Jack of Shadows.

Do we really need a new hypothesis on how evolution works? Ever since Charles Darwin proposed his theory of evolution by natural selection, the topic has attracted endless debates. Prior to Darwin's proposal of natural selection, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck had proposed his theory of evolution by inheritance of acquired characteristics, generally known as Lamarckism. But Darwinism later became the preferred mechanism to Lamarckism (although recent years have seen a surge of interest in improvised versions of the concept, known as neo-Lamarckism). The battle has now shifted to the evolution vs. creationism debate, with creationists often pushing their ideas under the guise of intelligent design.

While enough evidence has accumulated to demonstrate that the theory of evolution has been proven beyond sensible debate, the scope of action by natural selection in driving evolution is debatable. Human evolution, for example, has proceeded around 100 times faster in the last 10,000 years than it had ever before. How could that have happened when this is a period when natural selection's effect on us has actually reduced considerably? Proof for natural selection in action is also rare and mostly restricted to microbes.

Although the majority of evolutionary biologists accept automatically that natural selection satisfactorily explains evolution, a sizable minority of scientists (without any religious agenda) believe that the story is far from over. For example, pandas (the species as a whole) should be able to decide on the ideal position for a new thumb. Secondly, considering that it can, it has to be able to do two things. Communicate any such design parameters to the germ-line cells (the sperm and egg in animals) and based on these parameters, make any necessary modifications to the genome. Using many examples, BEEM demonstrates that every species is capable of performing all these actions.

Very,Very Important Work

I have an extensive scientific background and I can tell you that this is an incredibly important book. Essentially, the author brings together an increasing body of research that indicates that cells have the "intelligence" needed (probably through networks of chemical reactions that form the equivalent of neural networks) to direct their own evolution. So there is a good argument for "intelligent design" but not by a supernatural entity.
This insight, in my estimation, answers a lot of the unsolved dilemmas regarding the mechanism of evolution. Classic natural selection may be only a fine-tuning mechanism. I feel badly that nobody appears to be aware of this book and I am the first to review it. I have recommended it to some scientifically oriented friends and they have been very impressed.

A man and his country at the crossroads of life and death and death and life.

While I much prefer Kawabata's Snow Country, I found The Sound of the Mountain a very worthwhile read as well. Kawabata is a master of the delicate detail, the telling nuance. This novel works on a number of levels.

Most basically, it is the tale of Ogata Shingo, an aging businessman, slowly losing his faculties and descending into old age and decrepitude. He is not there yet, as he struggles to deal with his scrappy, common sensical wife, his depressed and quietly rebellious son Shuichi, his divorced and unhappy daughter Fasuko and her bratty daughter Satoko, and on the other end of the spectrum, his beautiful, dutiful, half in love with him daughter in law, Kikuko. Even the dog Teru has a role to play as she efficiently brings five pups into the world who are eventually given away. The action is quiet, almost non-existent, as the family eats meals, worries about the cherry trees and other flora, as well as fauna in the yard, and learns to adjust to Fasuko's divorce and Kikuko and Shuichi's rocky start to their marriage.

Shingo tries to deal with this with all the clarity that he can muster, but he is far from perfect. His own marriage is dogged by his constant harking back to the fact that he was originally attracted to his wife's much more attractive sister, who unfortunately died. Shingo in that and other things lacks sufficient clarity of thought and feeling. He tries to apply the Confucian and other endemic principles imbued in him in a world that is changing before his eyes. His own emotional make up causes difficulties, as he is drawn to Kikuko, at the same time that she is drawn to him emotionally, but he is much too fine a man to become physically involved with his daughter in law (as is she). But the pull is always there and most delicately rendered by Kawabata.

All of this is rendered against a backdrop of a nation, ethnic group and culture putting the shards of life back together after the crushing, humiliating defeat of World War II. I have never seen any writing that gives one more insight into the visceral disappointment, humiliation and dislocation that the outcome of the war visited upon the Japanese.

As painful as it is, we see the family struggling to adjust to the new ways and the new life they face in the 1950s. As Shingo feels his own death and the death of old Japan approaching, we see the following generation, scarred by the war, yet moving ahead into a less formal, more down to earth future.

All of this is rendered by a master of the telling detail. The reader can sense the depth of Kikuko and Shingo's feelings for each other--yet in the 270 pages of this edition they never touch each other passionately or express other than the most respectful of father-daughter sentiment. Yet the cauldron boils underneath. For Kawabata a few strokes of the pen do what most writers cannot achieve in a lengthy chapter.

The insights of a great artist, showing us the inner life of a few individuals, yet exemplifying the forces driving an entire nation in a trying time.

A great read, had me wishing it was longer!

The sound of the mountain's title made me believe that the sound ( the main characters feeling of looming death of old age) would be a large section of the book but the show here gets stolen by the relationships that shingo the main character forms and changes.

The growing closeness in between his son's wife and himself are what makes this story enjoyable to read about, this story is honest yet sweet. it's not overly dramatic in its events, and manages to still be a book that has you at the edge of your seat as to what happens next in this plethora of changing relationships. The book is great but those who like epic novels and the like will most likely be bored here, but make no doubt, this story is both frightening with shingo's growing strains with his wife and son and his fear of death but also perplexing yet heartwarming growing relationship with his husband's wife. He secretly lusts after her yet he has tremendous growing respect for her. Seeing this develop had me at the edge of my seat.

I would definitely Recomend this great story and the book itself comes in a decently compact size which I prefer and best of all with a decently sized font that won't strain the eyes, If your looking for a interesting story with with interesting characters and dynamic relationships then pick this up!

Impossible to get to literature through mistakes (Kindle edition!)

The story, like any by the writer, is subtle and layered. However, the edition was full of mistakes and mistypes. Up to the point where there were 3-4 mistakes in a page. Trying to report them, I was constantly switching between book pages and content error pages. Sad.

About the Author
Gennaro Contaldo worked in several restaurants around the UK and in London, where he eventually opened the award-winning Passione. He came to public attention as the chef who inspired Jamie Oliver when they worked together at Antonio Carluccio's Neal Street restaurant. In Spring 2011 he co-presented Two Greedy Italians on BBC2 with Antonio Carluccio, and in spring 2012 a second series, Two Greedy Italians Still Hungry, was broadcast. He is the author of several cookbooks, including Gennaro's Italian Year, Let's Cook Italian, and Passione.

If you are very interested in Italian recipes, this is a decent one for your collection.
By I Do The Speed Limit
There are about 100 recipes in this book: Soups, pasta, stews, roasts, "savory bakes", light dishes, even leftovers. There are bread recipes, cakes, desserts and the book ends with preserves. There are several topics in the list that I just rattled through that pique my interest: Preserves, soups, savory bakes, leftovers and stews.

Note: "Slow Cook", not slow cooker, not crock pot. But, that is not to say Gennaro ignores the slow cooker. On the contrary, while he does not use one at home, he does include separate instructions for using one for some of the recipes. (Be aware though, that you are going to have stove-top cooking to complete before placing food into the slow cooker. So, there are no recipes here that you can plop into the cooker at 5 a.m. before you leave for your commute to work....)

If you are wondering who this guy is: The author, Gennaro Contaldo, had a hand in teaching Jamie Oliver about Italian cooking.

To be honest with you: The publisher was looking for reviews of this book, but only allowed me to glimpse about 40 pages of it. So my four-star rating is based on what I did see. It does look interesting though, with plenty of beautiful photographs, easy-to-read page layouts, and a decent representation of foods from different regions in Italy (not only southern Italy where he and his family are from).

It appears that there is a photo to go with each recipe. Recipe instructions are straightforward. Ingredient lists are not too long, and include both metric and imperial measurements. There is a decent 5-page index.

Gennaro makes the most of inexpensive cuts of meat, dried beans, peas and lentils. In addition to the usual meats--lamb, pork, beef--Gennaro includes game birds and animals. Be aware that Gennaro includes veal shin/knuckle/ossobuco in his list of "cheap" cuts of meat. Where I live, that is one of the most expensive meats in the butcher case......

I was excited to see a pork stew among the recipes I was allowed to see. (I often buy a large pork butt roast and cube it up, divide it up, and freeze portions.) Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the results. It was good--don't get me
wrong--but, it was not spectacular or unusual. (It contained carrot, onion, celery, potato, frozen peas, sage.)

Here are some others I've tried over the past few months:
--A beautiful lasagna with slow-cooked vegetables in a white sauce: Celery, carrot, turnip, pumpkin, mushrooms and more.
--A Tyrolean beef stew gently simmered for two hours with garlic, onions, cumin, paprika and thyme. (Includes slow cooker directions.)
--A roast leg of lamb with white wine, onions, olives, garlic, anchovy and peas. It is a spectacular presentation!

Some recipes I read about, but did not see ingredient lists or instructions for:
--Boozy baked chicken with peppers
--The Italian classic La Genovese, which is beef with onions
--Summer vegetable stew

I like food. I like Italian food and I like to cook. i also like this cook book. The recipes are clear and easy to follow. The Osso Buco is to die for! A good addition to amy cook book collection.

Cook Like An Italian Stallion

Love to cook Italian but don't have the time? Meet Gennaro Contaldo, the Italian Stallion, chef and friend to Jamie Oliver. I first saw Gennaro on a Christmas show of Jamie's and laughed my head off. He is funny, down to earth and knows his food.

In this cookbook, he shares with you all of his secrets to making authentic Italian food in half the time. Each recipe is easy to understand and the pictures are wonderful! I have tried a few recipes and they turned out perfectly!

This book is a must own in each cook's kitchen and makes a fabulous gift!
