Great ideas book

This book was written just at the time when pc's were getting more powerful and cheaper gpu's which put CAD and engineering simulation within reach of the already financially strained student. CAD is now of course commonplace, necessary and not an elective. After an introductory chapter on the machine design process, kinematics is reviewed for the sake of the student who very probably did not have a course in this, as the author admits, it is now rare. This is followed by a brief chapter on dynamics. After this comes chapters on the design process proper exemplified through case studies and design procedures. Here you quickly become aware that this is a senior undergraduate/first-year graduate text as you see free use of mechanics of materials concepts, fluid mechanics(especially in lubrication and journal bearings), heat transfer(heating of brakes through friction), finite elements, drafting- pretty much every m.e. undergrad course. He uses the CAD software suite MELAB 2.0 for his examples but any suite which performs the desired operations would do. The problems he gives are essentially CAD projects and careful attention paid to case studies and the design procedures take you a long way into completing these. Good, not-so-gentle introduction to the design process.

Individual chapters have been contributed by sixteen experts. The book opens with an introduction by Donald E. Knuth to two thousand years of combinatorics. This is followed by seven chapters on early combinatorics, leading from Indian and Chinese writings on permutations to late-Renaissance publications on the arithmetical triangle. The next seven chapters trace the subsequent story, from Euler's contributions to such wide-ranging topics as partitions, polyhedra, and latin squares to the 20th century advances in combinatorial set theory, enumeration, and graph theory. The book concludes with some combinatorial reflections by the distinguished combinatorialist, Peter J. Cameron.

This book is not expected to be read from cover to cover, although it can be. Rather, it aims to serve as a valuable resource to a variety of audiences. Combinatorialists with little or no knowledge about the development of their subject will find the historical treatment stimulating. A historian of mathematics will view its assorted surveys as an encouragement for further research in combinatorics. The more general reader will discover an introduction to a fascinating and too little known subject that continues to stimulate and inspire the work of scholars today.

Robin Wilson, Emeritus Professor of Pure Mathematics, The Open University, UK and a Visiting Professor in the History of Mathematics at the London School of Economics.,John J. Watkins, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, Colorado College

Robin Wilson is an Emeritus Professor of Pure Mathematics at the Open University, Emeritus Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, London, and a former Fellow of Keble College, Oxford. He was President of the British Society for the History of Mathematics from 2012 to 2014s. He has written and edited many books on graph theory, including Introduction to Graph Theory and Four Colours Suffice, and on the history of mathematics, including Lewis Carroll in Numberland. He is involved with the popularization and communication of mathematics and its history, and was awarded a Polya prize by the Mathematical Association of America for 'outstanding expository writing'.



John J. Watkins is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Colorado College, USA. He received his doctorate from the University of Kansas, specializing in commutative ring theory. His main research interest, however, has been in graph theory and he has published mainly in this area, including many papers with undergraduates as co-authors. He has written several books, including Graphs: An Introductory Approach, Across the Board: The Mathematics of Chessboard Problems, and Topics in Commutative Ring Theory, and has recently finished his latest book, Elementary Number Theory. Colorado College presented John Watkins with the 2005 Boettcher Award for Faculty Excellence.

This is an edited book of chapters on the history of combinatorics from ancient times to modern times, and the editors are well known in graph theory circles, especially Wilson. In this case, you can tell a book by its cover. Let me whet your appetite with some names of chapters and the authors. Donald E Knuth kicks off with "Two thousand years of combinatorics" - he covers an average of 50 years/page. "Jewish combinatorics" is by Victor Katz. A.W.F. Edwards writes a chapter "The arithmetical triangle". Why does he not call this "Pascal's triangle"? Read it and find out. George Andrews writes about partitions - who else?. Nicely bound; lovely diagrams; you don't have to start at page 1 and read through to p. 370 or so. You can just sit, dip ... and sip. Enjoy!

About the Author
Charles G. Finney (1792-1875) is recognized as the most effective evangelist of the 19th century. It is estimated that more than half a million people were converted to Christ through his evangelistic ministry. After becoming a lawyer he carefully explored the claims of Christ and was powerfully converted in 1821. An avid student of the Bible, he soon engaged in preaching and teaching throughout many eastern and southern states. The result was a revival which altered the course of American history.

Clear Succinct Definition of Love (almost perfect)

Love the attitude behind this and the overall articulation from a man who was a lawyer eventually converted to Christ. The challenge with Finney's Systematic Theology is he is no longer alive to shape it new as he would have learned more of Christ and the relevant language in description of his thoughts would have changed to be clearer today (over 100 years ago). Nevertheless, this book takes the best of what this wisdom he discovered is about and makes this focal point clear and it does this in just a few pages.

A great application of folk tales to real life, very relevant to reality. The author helps frame the midlife transition in a way that is consistent with other things I have read, and as it turns out my own sometimes rocky experience.

Forty + Ten= You Must Read This!

I wasted time attempting to find the book at a retailer and the local library (so I eventually bought it used through Amazon.com). What a read! The author, a pschyiatrist schooled in Jungian theory, shares (and analyzes) numerous "Middle Tales" (as opposed to fairy or elder tales). Middle tales desribe life beyond the "...and they lived happily ever after" of fairy tales. The "ah-ha" quoitient, especially for those of us who are living the "middle years", is close to 100! Dr. Chinen's insights bring one closer to the belief that there is a collective unconscious. (Or Not!) Definitely worth the search.
