About the Author

Jennifer D. Keene is a Professor of History and chair of the History Department at Chapman University in Orange, California. Dr. Keene has published three books on the American involvement in the First World War: Doughboys, the Great War and the�Remaking of America (2001); The United States and the First World War (2000); and World War I: The American Soldier Experience (2011). She has received numerous fellowships for her research, including a Mellon Fellowship, a National Research Council Postdoctoral Award, and Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards to Australia and France. Her articles have appeared in the Annales de D�mographie Historique, Peace & Change, Intelligence and National Security, and Military Psychology. Dr. Keene served as an associate editor for the Encyclopedia of War and American Society (2005), which won the Society of Military History’s prize for best reference book. She works closely with the Gilder-Lehrman Institute, offering Teaching American History workshops for secondary school teachers throughout the country.

Saul Cornell is the Paul and Diane Guenther Chair in American History at Fordham University in New York. Professor Cornell has also taught at the Ohio State University, the College of William and Mary, Leiden University in the Netherlands, and has been a visiting�scholar at Yale Law School. He is the author of A Well Regulated Militia: The Founding Fathers and the Origins of Gun Control (Langum Prize in Legal History) and The Other Founders: Anti-Federalism and the Dissenting Tradition in America, 1788–1828 (Society of the Cincinnati Book Prize), both of which were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His articles have appeared in the Journal of American History, the William and Mary Quarterly, American Studies, Law and History Review, and dozens of leading law reviews. His work has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court and several state Supreme Courts. He lectures widely on topics in legal and constitutional history and the use of visual materials to teach American history.

Edward T. O’Donnell is an Associate Professor of History at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He taught previously at Hunter College, City University of New York. He is the author of Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy of the Steamboat General

Slocum (Random House, 2003) and the forthcoming Talisman of a Lost Hope: Henry George and Gilded Age America (Columbia University Press). His articles have appeared in The Journal of Urban History, The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, and The Public Historian. He is also very active in the field of public history, curating exhibits and consulting at institutions such as the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the New York Historical Society. Since 2002, he has worked with more than fifty Teaching American History grant programs across the country, offering lectures and workshops for middle and high school teachers.

Concise but complex

This is the first college text books I read more than required of by the professor. Although I was familiar with almost all of the subjects it shed new light on American history that I had not seen before. Events were easy to connect and understand. Everytime I read I found myself thinking "wow, I had no idea".

About the Author
Professor John Watton began his career in industry working on the design of heat exchangers. He later entered University College Cardiff to study mechanical engineering. On completion of his PhD in fluidic control in 1969 he returned to industry as a Senior Systems Engineer working on the electrohydraulic control of guided pipe laying vehicles with Hudswell Badger Ltd, Leeds. Following a period as a Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering and Control at Huddersfield Polytechnic, he joined Cardiff University as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1979. He was awarded his DSc (University of Wales) for contributions to fluid power in 1996. He also received the IMechE Bramah Medal in 2000 and a special award from the Japanese Fluid Power Society in 2005, both for outstanding contributions in fluid power. He was elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1997 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007.

Doesn't help you learn anything

I completed the Java in 24 Hour book, which was quite helpful. So I picked up this book to get me started with Android development thinking it would be of similar quality. Forget it. I have been working with this book for about 6 weeks and have not yet complete Hour 4. This is not the book for anyone trying to learn Android. For example, in Hour 2 there is no mention of why the code you copied from the book is getting errors (you need to do imports). That's okay in Hour 8 maybe, but not Hour 2. Also the example code which you may or may not be able to find on the Sams website does not include all the code needed to complete the activities at the end of the chapter.

I have been a programmer for more than 20 years, so it's not that I'm unfamiliar with programming concepts.

I really want to throw this book out the window, but hope Amazon will take it back instead!

Many of the examples in the book are either incomplete, or contain errors! Unless you already know Eclipse and Java (in that case, why are you buying this book?), you are going to be very confused. On the up side, this book will not let you just copy the code examples and not learn the language. You are going to do enough research to find the correct coding that you WILL learn Android Application development. (e.g. Better plan on about 10 hours for lesson 2.) I bought the Sams "IOS6 Application Development" and it was OUTSTANDING! I used it and was able to develop an iPhone app. I found none of the issues with it, that are in this book.

I seem to keep coming back to the Sams "24" hr books when I need to learn programming. For me, the "24 hours" is more like "24 days", but their structure breaks down tasks and teaches in a very modular way that I relate to. I use these books both as a tutorial and as a reference.
