If you own the orginal stay away

The only reason I am rating this so high is because I am not deriving its value in comparison to the original but instead I am deriving the value of this publishing as if it were not a reprint.
Now with that being stated, internally you can expect this book to be the same as the original in terms of content.The production value of this books, however, is fantastic. The cover is both aesthetically and tactilely pleasing, to an extreme degree. This may be due to the age of my original copy but even the pages seems to be a higher quality, they feel thicker and the gloss is much more alluring. The art within the book is amazing and there is a lot of it, however this is the same case as the original publishing.
Now to the subject of the functionality of the book, if you find your players bringing multiple books to the table just for the spells contained within this book will be of great help. It doesn't contain every spell in the 3.5 universe but it does contain a good percentage of all the spells my players use. Not by design but just by chance.
All in all, if you don't care about how your book looks, (which personally I do it really adds to DM'ing for me) pick up a used copy of the original. This books is well made and worth the price in my opinion.

Group Loves Me For This Purchase

I would recommend this book to anybody still playing D&D 3.0 or 3.5 and probably to anyone playing Pathfinder. It is a wonderful guide to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of spells that were gathered from everywhere but the original player's handbook. My group adores this book, and while having more than one in a single group will likely just prove redundant, it would be helpful if you have three or four spell casters at once. Every DM or Pathfinder GM should take a long and serious look at buying this book. The print and artwork is beautiful and of extremely high quality as well.

A Good Book for Builders of Wood-Strip and Fiberglass Boats

Building Strip-Planked Boats by Nick Schade primarily describes methods for building beautiful boats from wood strips, fiberglass and epoxy. It updates many techniques that were described in the author's earlier book, The Strip-Built Sea Kayak. This book also provides offset dimensions and instructions to build a dinghy, a one-person canoe and a rough-water sea kayak.

This book provides an excellent overview of wood-core and fiberglass construction, and detailed information on working with wood strips, fiberglass and epoxy. Many practical tips are included, as well as suggestions for avoiding and dealing with the most common problems.

However, the book seems to be missing a few chapters. Significant information for the first-time builder is absent in this book: The kayak section contains no information on the construction of bulkheads, footbraces, rudders, retractable skegs, or outfitting the boat with deck rigging and a seat. Many best practices are missing, such as measuring epoxy with nested cups, preserving brushes and rollers by freezing, pre-taping seams for joining hull and deck, and using webbing for deck riggings.

Other best building practices receive only scant mention, such as using masking tape and a sharp blade to trim secondary layers of fiberglass. The book would also have benefited from more photographs of the finished boats.

The book would have been more appealing if it offered designs for a more general-purpose canoe and a more general-purpose kayak, as fewer people will be interested in these niche designs.

This book is a good supplement for boat-builders, but most first-time builders of a strip boat would probably learn more from the step-by-step organization of Nick Schade's first book, The Strip-Built Sea Kayak: Three Rugged, Beautiful Boats You Can Build, or Ted Moores' books Canoecraft: An Illustrated Guide to Fine Woodstrip Construction and Kayakcraft: Fine Woodstrip Kayak Construction. This is a 3-star book.

Good intro to little boats

If you already have some solid basic woodworking skills and have been around canoes and kayaks enough to know basically what they look like, this book contains most of the information you would need to build one, including plans and offsets for what look like a couple of beauties. It also explains "lofting" in such a way that anyone who got a D- or better in High School algebra should be able to get it. That said, this is not the best book I've found on strip-building boats, but it wouldn't be a bad choice at all.

good but too scattered

There are many good points in this book but in my opinion it is trying to be too much for too wide an audience. In the process of covering multiple types of craft the "gems" are somewhat hidden. It was a good effort, but I wish in this case it had been more linear in the presentation. Don't get me wrong, I would buy it again.

About the Author

Tara L. Kuther is Professor of Psychology at Western Connecticut State University where she has taught courses in child, adolescent, and adult development since 1996. She earned her BA in Psychology from Western Connecticut State University and her MA and PhD in Developmental Psychology at Fordham University. �Dr. Kuther’s research on moral development, social cognition, and risks to adolescent development has appeared in journals such as Journal of Adolescence, Journal of Early Adolescence, Addictive Behaviors, and the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. Dr. Kuther is particularly interested in promoting undergraduate and graduate students’ professional development and has authored over a dozen books intended to help students navigate the challenges of pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology.

Dr Kuther is Fellow of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (American Psychological Association, Division 2). Her interest in promoting excellence in college teaching has influenced her scholarly and professional activities.� Dr. Kuther’s� work examining ethical issues that arise in higher education and methods of sensitizing students to ethical issues has appeared in journals such as Teaching of Psychology, College Teaching, and Gerontology and Geriatrics Education. �� Currently the chair of the Society for Research in Child Development Teaching Committee, Dr. Kuther has also been active in the Society for the Teaching of Psychology �as Executive Committee member,� chair of the Task Force on Instructional Research Awards,� and chair of the Long Range Planning Committee.�

Sara Moliner is the pseudonym for the writing duo Rosa Ribas and Sabine Hofmann. Rosa Ribas was born in Barcelona and now teaches at Frankfurt University. The Whispering City by Sara Moliner

Barcelona, 1952.

General Francisco Franco’s fascist Government has Spain in a death grip. People are afraid, as those who oppose Franco are dealt with brutally. Once prosperous families now find themselves in menial jobs because they dared to oppose the regime.

Mariona Sobrerroca, a wealthy socialite, has been discovered murdered in her home, with clear signs of a robbery. A suspect, Able Mendoza, is named on the very first page.

The editor of the La Vanguardia newspaper which runs only by Franco’s largess needs a reporter to write the articles for the paper. Editor Mateo Sanvisens assigns female reporter Ana Mart� Nogeur, and daughter of a newspaper publisher that Franco’s government ruined, to the case.

She is to shadow Inspector Isidro Castro of the Criminal Investigation Brigade as he collects evidence. Castro is a product of the regime whose tactics run to intimidation, beatings, and torture. He only wants to close cases. The facts do not bother him as long as the case is closed and his bosses satisfied.

But Mart� has the hunger of an investigative reporter and her sleuthing, and consulting with former Professor Betriz Nogeur, her newfound cousin; leads to a stack of letters that could break the case. The letters show that more than one woman has been victimized, but are the women all dead, and are all the letters by the same man: that is the question.

This book has a strange effect on me. I will say that it isn’t the best prose I’ve ever read. Sometimes it was like wading in molasses. At times I would get to the end of a chapter, and still wonder when, what, where, when, why and how.

But here’s the thing. I kept reading. I couldn’t put the book down. The prose has a positive effect on the reader in that it is capable of mesmerizing one without one even realizing it.

As one gets further into the prose, the historical insight on what it meant to be a reporter who feels the people have a right to know, and a policeman who is trying to do his job the best he can while under a Dictator who must be obeyed at all costs; makes for pretty good reading.

The mystery is layered, and there is no closure that doesn’t lead to further questioning. Those deemed guilty are punished, but not necessarily because they were guilty.

In rating this book I must rely on an age old standard. Is this novel written in such a way as to draw the reader in? That answer is an undisputed “Yes!” Sometimes the prose may be a little hard to wade through, but there is always a light and a beckoning finger that keeps you reading on to the end.

That kind of talent doesn’t often come along. Sara Moliner, Bravo! I grant five out of five stars!

Barcelona, Spain, 1952: a thief picks a lock and stealthily enters a house in a fashionable neighbourhood, only to encounter a woman lying dead on the floor, beaten and then strangled. The house has been ransacked. The man flees, certain only that he doesn’t want to be any part of it.

The victim is Mariona Sobrerroca. The widow of a wealthy man, Jer�nimo Garmendia, the case is certain to attract public attention. But a Eucharistic Congress is to be held in the city in a month’s time, and the public prosecutor, Joaqu�n Grau, wants it solved before then.

Before long journalist Ana Mart� receives a call from her editor: he wants her to over the story. La Vanguardia has been handed an exclusive by the police in an effort to control press coverage. Inspector Isidro Castro of the Criminal Inspection Brigade in charge of the investigation. Marti is told to work closely with him, in effect publishing only the official police account of the case. Not an unusual turn of events in 1950’s Spain.

Still, Mart� is surprised by her assignment. Normally such prominent stories would go to her colleague, Carlos Belda, a man of some experience who covers the police beat. Was it due to her editor’s friendship with her father? One thing is certain: Belda will be angry when he learned she’d been handed the plum assignment. Belda is not nearly so angry as Inspector Castro, though, when he learns that an inexperienced reporter usually assigned to cover fashion and social events has been handed the case. He is openly contemptuous of her, and tells her so. Then he lays out the rule by which she will be allowed to work with him: she will work only from his notes.

But the fledgling reporter insists she will cover the story herself. Thus begins a many-layered tale that includes not only a murder, but also a cat-an-mouse game between a headstrong reporter who senses her opportunity to move up and a police detective used to getting his way, played out against the intrigues of the shadowy world of Barcelona. It is a well-structured tale that can be enjoyed on many levels, not least in the authors’ ability to paint a revealing portrait of everyday life in Franco’s Spain.

Employing multiple points of view and an informed awareness of Spanish life, THE WHISPERING CITY is the first novel of writing duo Rosa Ribas and Sabine Hoffman, and augurs well for their future work. There are several less-than-felicitous writing errors, but they are of little consequence; most readers will enjoy a well-told tale that could mark the debut of an intriguing series featuring the odd-couple duo of Ana Mart� and Inspector Isidro Castro.

Ana Marti is a young journalist, who chafes at having to write stories on the society parties and fashions of the day. Now, one of the socialites she reported on has been murdered. Mariona Sobrerroca, widow of a well known doctor, has been discovered in her husband’s office – pale, blonde, voluptuous and dead… With the normal crime writer away, Ana gets her chance to do some real reporting for once.

Ana has to work under the rules of the Inspector assigned to the case. Isidro Castro is heavy handed and, like most of the men Ana comes into contact with, is not thrilled at the interference of a woman in his case. Castro is under pressure to solve the case before the Eucharistic Congress, which is going to be held in Barcelona the next month, so he is keen to track down the murderer. However, when Ana comes across a clue that everyone else has over looked, she begins to investigate herself. Along with Beatriz Noguer, a specialist in linguistics who is unable to work under the new regime, the two women discover the murder is not a simple interrupted burglary, as they first thought.

This is a really interesting mystery, with great characters and an interesting background. The level of corruption and casual police violence is brilliantly written. Both Ana and Beatriz have suffered under the regime, the press are virtually dictated to and free speech is dangerous. The novel weaves various strands of storyline together really well and I really enjoyed the characters of both Ana and Beatriz and hope they appear in further novels. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.
