Chemistry: An Atoms First Approach, by Steven S. Zumdahl, Susan A. Zumdahl

Steve and Susan Zumdahl's books focus on helping readers build critical thinking skills through the process of becoming independent problem-solvers. Their philosophy is to help readers learn to "think like a chemists" so they can apply the process of problem solving to all aspects of their lives. In CHEMISTRY: AN ATOMS FIRST APPROACH, the Zumdahls use a meaningful approach that begins with the atom and proceeds through the concept of molecules, structure, and bonding, to more complex materials and their properties. This approach encourages readers to focus on conceptual learning early in the course, rather than relying on memorization and a "plug and chug" method of problem solving that even the best learners can fall back on when confronted with familiar material. The Atoms First organization provides an opportunity for readers to use the tools of critical thinkers: to ask questions, to apply rules and models and to evaluate outcomes.

an excellent textbook
By Helpfile
I found the textbook to offer thorough coverage of general chemistry. It was used for two classes. The information is delivered in a straightforward manner, and uptake is enhanced by graphs and pictures, as well as detailed examples.

Chemistry is very methodical, and strict adherence to method is emphasized throughout the book.

The review questions offer tie-ins to mathematics and to other sciences -- for example, Calculus and Biochemistry. This is an excellent offering and makes me wonder if that is standard of chemistry textbooks. Although calculus was not required for the courses I took, understanding it is extremely helpful in understanding the basis of many of the formulas and will ease their retention and application.

I will be keeping this for a bit and going over the material on my own time. The information is foundational to all sciences.

I got a good deal on the book
By Michael
I got a good deal on the book, but I don't really care for how this is written. I usually dedicate a great deal of time in my courses by reading the chapters, and this book is very... wordy? I don't know how to describe it, but I feel many of the concepts aren't clearly defined and while history is important many of the ideas are riddled with little factoids that may be interesting, but aren't relevant in a general chemistry class.

Poorly Written, Confusing Text
By M. Hill
I do hate this textbook. I have used it for General Chemistry I & 2. The authors have a knack for poorly explaining topics, and accelerating from 0 to 60 in one sentence, so to speak. This leaves the chemistry novice really grappling to understand their thought process. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I got As in both classes, but not thanks to this book.
