Sixpence Bride, by Virginia Farmer

The reenactment of an eighteenth-century wife sale sounded like fun to Jocelyn Tanner. But then one small pink foil star changed her entire life.
Cast back in time she finds herself inhabiting another woman’s body and she’s being sold to the highest bidder. And a very handsome one at that. No matter that his chauvinistic attitude ruffles her feathers, her heart doesn’t listen to her head. But will her knowledge of the future be her doom or her salvation?
Finding a wife isn’t as easy as Garren Warrick, the Earl of Spenceworth thought. Time was fast running out for him to enter into wedlock or be disowned. He should have spent more time looking over the crop of marriage-minded ladies and less time in his club drinking and avoiding them. Desperate and just a little hungover, he comes upon a wife sale and realizes the solution to his problem is just a sixpence away.
But has he gotten more than he bargained for? Can he unravel the mystery behind the odd words she uses and her obsession with something called ‘ab crunches?’ And what about her claim of being from the future? She’s beautiful and well-educated and when he looks into her soft gray eyes and touches her smooth, warm skin, she steals his heart. But can he truly embrace the growing love without unraveling the mystery behind the odd words she uses and her obsession with something called ‘ab crunches?’ And what about her claim of being from the future?

Little does he know he’s gotten much more for his money than he bargained—she’s beautiful, well-educated, but talks a little oddly and has an obsession with something called ‘ab crunches.’ And let’s not forget her claim of being from the future. But when he looks into her soft gray eyes and touches her smooth, warm skin, his heart ignores it all and he begins to see her as a kindhearted, loving woman with a few little quirks.

This is an updated version of the print book released in 2000. Nelwina's name has been changed to Rose.

Review
A delightful romp of a book! Farmer fully exploits her time-travel theme to maximize the fun. -- The Romance Reader

Ms. Farmer's characters make this an enjoyable read. -- Romantic Times

From the Author
While thumbing through a book in a bookstore, I stumbled across an eighteenth-century handbill proclaiming the sale of a wife.

I began to wonder, what would happen if a modern-day woman found herself back in time--in another woman's body and married to an English lord?

And Jocelyn Tanner's story began.

From the Inside Flap
"Ah, your aim is off," he teased. Mimicking the way she held her spoon, Garren flung a spoonful of dessert at her. The glob hit the side of her head and ran into her ear.

His crow of laughter filled the dining room.

"Yuck," Jocelyn said, trying to wipe the creamy mixture from her ear. This was not what she'd expected after dinner. She had assumed he would expect to consummate their marriage. Loading her spoon, she faked a shot. When he ducked, she lowered her aim, hitting him at his hairline.

"Yes!" She grinned.

She felt a cool splat on her chest and looked down as his second shot disappeared into her decolletage and between her breasts. Squirming, she looked at him, her eyes narrowing.

Loading her spoon, she started a rapid fire of her dessert, and Garren followed suit. By the time the bowls were empty, they both sported globs of the sticky substance in their hair and on their clothing; they were laughing like children.

Garren stood, offering his arm. Making sure her shoulders were straight and her spine stiff, Jocelyn placed her hand ever so slightly on his sleeve--but her regal bearing was lost when her slipper slid in one of the dessert puddles. Garren reached around her waist to steady her, and she slid to a halt in his arms. His warm brown eyes met hers and his warmth flowed into her body.

Her husband's lips came down, lightly brushing hers. "I love dessert."

a enjoyable read
By Brenda Condit
I bought this book when one of my Amazon.com friends bought it and gave me a discount if I bought it also. I'm glad I did. It was an enjoyable, quick read.
The story is a time-travel-historial one where the heroine is not only transported back in time but into another body. Jocelyn starts off on a bus tour in England where they have stopped to see a reenactment of a Bride sale. She is the chosen "bride" and gets into the costume only to find that everything has changed, including herself. She is sold to a handsome Lord Garren who is only marrying to get his father off his back. He is strongly attracted to her but cannot understand her strange ways and her insistance that she is in the wrong body! He deposits her at his country home and goes back to his old life. Jocelyn soon realizes that she cannot change the fact that she is now someone else and in another time but decides to adapt. She starts with making the new body hers which causes several raised eyebrows. She soon enlists Garren's father to help her win Garren. It is a very amusing plan.
Garren soon realizes that he needs her and loves her but is still unable to believe her story. They both must struggle to trust each other and overcome the past and the future.
I really enjoyed this tale and I look forward to others by this author. I'd like to see a sequel about the girl who took over Jocelyn's modern body.

A wonderful tale!

Imagine awakening in a different century -- and in a different body, and you have the makings of a wildly original story. Written with a deft hand and sparkling orginality, this time travel is a must-buy for lovers of romantic fiction. Ms. Farmer's debut book certainly showcased her wonderful talent, and I hope she writes a new one SOON.

A Keeper!
By Huntress Reviews
Jocelyn Tanner was part of a mock bride auction. When her blood sugar dropped (the symptoms sounded like Hypoglycemia) she sat down to keep from passing out. Instead, she passed through time! After the blackness faded, she found herself in a real bride auction! She was sold for a sixpence to Lord Garren Spenceworth and immediately wed.
Garren's father had found out that he had bed Melody, a widow. His father took the opportunity to demand Garren wed within one month or he would choose a bride for Garren! The month was near the end. Out of spite to the ultimatum, Garren purchased a bride. It did not matter to him that she spoke strangely OR that she swore she was in a stranger's body! But when he fell in love with her the trouble began.
Now Melody and her brother were causing trouble, a gypsy lady kept appearing at odd times to help Jocelyn out and tell her that someone else was transferred into her twentieth century body, and happiness seemed impossible!
*** Oh, how I hope the lady who went to the twentieth century has her story next! This one is a KEEPER! You would do well to order in advance so you do not forget! DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS ONE! Highly recommended! Awesome! ***
