There is a passage early in Augusten Burroughs's harrowing and highly entertaining memoir, Running with Scissors, that speaks volumes about the author. While going to the garbage dump with his father, young Augusten spots a chipped, glass-top coffee table that he longs to bring home. "I knew I could hide the chip by fanning a display of magazines on the surface, like in a doctor's office," he writes, "And it certainly wouldn't be dirty after I polished it with Windex for three hours." There were certainly numerous chips in the childhood Burroughs describes: an alcoholic father, an unstable mother who gives him up for adoption to her therapist, and an adolescence spent as part of the therapist's eccentric extended family, gobbling prescription meds and fooling around with both an old electroshock machine and a pedophile who lives in a shed out back. But just as he dreamed of doing with that old table, Burroughs employs a vigorous program of decoration and fervent polishing to a life that many would have simply thrown in a landfill. Despite her abandonment, he never gives up on his increasingly unbalanced mother. And rather than despair about his lot, he glamorizes it: planning a "beauty empire" and performing an a capella version of "You Light Up My Life" at a local mental ward. Burroughs's perspective achieves a crucial balance for a memoir: emotional but not self-involved, observant but not clinical, funny but not deliberately comic. "Bookman gave me attention. We would go for long walks and talk about all sorts of things. Like how awful the nuns were in his Catholic school when he was a kid and how you have to roll your lips over your teeth when you give a blowjob," writes Burroughs (Sellevision) about his affair, at age 13, with the 33-year-old son of his mother's psychiatrist. That his mother sent him to live with her shrink (who felt that the affair was good therapy for Burroughs) shows that this is not just another 1980s coming-of-age story. The son of a poet with a "wild mental imbalance" and a professor with a "pitch-black dark side," Burroughs is sent to live with Dr. Finch when his parents separate and his mother comes out as a lesbian. While life in the Finch household is often overwhelming (the doctor talks about masturbating to photos of Golda Meir while his wife rages about his adulterous behavior), Burroughs learns "your life [is] your own and no adult should be allowed to shape it for you." There are wonderful moments of paradoxical humor Burroughs, who accepts his homosexuality as a teen, rejects the squeaky-clean pop icon Anita Bryant because she was "tacky and classless" as well as some horrifying moments, as when one of Finch's daughters has a semi-breakdown and thinks that her cat has come back from the dead. Beautifully written with a finely tuned sense of style and wit the occasional clich‚ ("Life would be fabric-softener, tuna-salad-on-white, PTA-meeting normal") stands out anomalously this memoir of a nightmarish youth is both compulsively entertaining and tremendously provocative.

This memoir by Burroughs is certainly unique; among other adventures, he recounts how his mother's psychiatrist took her to a motel for therapy, while at home the kids chopped a hole in the roof to make the kitchen brighter. Not all craziness, though, this account reveals the feelings of sadness and dislocation this unusual upbringing brought upon Burroughs and his friends. His early family life was characterized by his parents' break-and-destroy fights, and after his parents separated, his mother practically abandoned Burroughs in hopes of achieving fame as a poet. At 12, he went to live with the family (and a few patients) of his mother's psychiatrist. At the doctor's home, children did as they wished: they skipped school, ate whatever they wanted, engaged in whatever sexual adventures came along, and trashed the house and everything in it, while the mother watched TV and occasionally dusted. Burroughs has written an entertaining yet horrifying account that isn't for the squeamish: the scatological content and explicit homosexual episodes may limit its appeal. I Could Not Put This Down!

"Running with Scissors: A Memoir", is Augusten Burroughs first published memoir. A friend recommended this book to me. I never heard of the author, until this book. I was not able to put it down. It is very well written. He details very personal events that happened to him when he was young. Burroughs gives a detailed account of his sexual relationship with an adult male, when he was just a minor. He is very open about his homosexuality, which is a very bold and honest account. "Running with Scissors" is very graphic in its sexual content and is for adult readers only. We learn about the author's life, he leaves nothing out. I highly recommend this book to you.

Note: After reading this, I was hooked on learning about the author's life. So, I immediately purchased all his other memoirs and read them in order. They were all excellent and well written. I admire him for his boldness and honesty.

The Worst

His goal is to shock you. He will. It begins easily enough, and you sympathize with the main character living with an eccentric mother. As the book progresses it becomes darker and darker. Physical abuse, mental abuse, spiritual abuse, sexual abuse, substance abuse. If you can finish the book, color me surprised. Because I feel abused after struggling through just half.

READ THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU YOU READ "DRY.: A MEMOiR."

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a very engaging and entertaining account of extreme family dysfunction. Someone in my book club chose the book; I was unpredared for the bizarre behavior I would encounter in this autobiographical novel.

The title captured my attention because running with scissors and other hazardous behaviors were strictly forbidden when I was growing up. At first it seemed that absolutely nothing was forbidden in this family. As the story unfolds a few seemingly incomprehensible rules are revealed. The reason for these rules becomes apparent near the end of the book.

Authors of autobiographical novels about family dysfunction rarely avoid the "poor me" syndrome. The author describes, but does not judge the family he grew up in.

This book demands that the reader suspend disbelief in order to continue; from my point of view, doing so was well worth the effort.

My favorite Encaustic Book

A 5 star plus. Although the other encaustic books I've read have also been wonderful, none compare to the information found in Encautic Art by Lissa Rankin. Because I spent my $$$ on paint and supplies instead of the $600. plus travel costs to take a good encaustic class, I had to become very informed before starting. (I wouldn't recommend this unless you are the kind that knows you can pull it off.) I still had many questions that remained unanswered until I read Encaustic Art. It's beneficial to have an array of encaustic books and info., but this will be the book you will go back to review the most.
It's been hard holding off the inspirations with having to learn a new medium but after much study I feel secure and excited to begin to paint; my first project being on 30" x 30" encausticbord. My industrial fan is being installed in my art room and the electrical checked to make sure it can handle the output of all the heating appliances; fire extingusher in place. A word on safety: I had my own stained glass business for 18 years and cannot stress the importance of re-reading the safety section of this book. I got a lot of toxins from my last job so always remember nothing is more important than your health. Thank you Lissa for sharing your encaustic knowledge. I appreciate your hard work. You have put together an excellent book!

Great book!

This book has it all, beautiful photos, great basic information, and the usual encaustic techniques but it goes much further. Using wax for sculpture, printmaking and much more. The quality of the book is really good too, nice paper and lots of great color photos. If you want to learn the basics, or expand your work in wax, I totally recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.

Fantastic Encaustic Book

This book is for the beginner as well as the professional encaustic artist. It offers so many ideas and great photos. Many techniques are covered along with a wealth of ideas that I haven't even thought of yet. I am a professional artist and instructor and will definitely recommend this book to my students. There are gallery shots as well as close-up details photos and artists working in their studio. I would love to see a companion book to this one that goes into even more detail on the techniques. Great work Lissa!

Great book exactly what I was looking for.

Bright Minds, Poor Grades

This is an excellent book for the parents of G/T students who are not bringing home the great grades they are capable of making. I have a 12 year old who tests in the 99 percentile on acheivement tests, is a Duke Tip student that received state recognition for his SAT scores as a 7th grader. His grades were C's, D's and F's. His teachers wanted him out of G/T classes but the Counselor and Principal realized that he would do worse in regular classes since G/T classes allow students to be more creative but-- this requires independence on the students part. His problems are with being independent and reponsible for his grades. This book has been amazing in helping us teach our child to be independent. Type A children are independent and competitive naturally. We must teach our Type B (but bright) children these skills. A must for parents everywhere who have bright kids with poor grades. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This works

My fifth grade son was showing every sign of classic underachievement. He had had a fourth grade teacher that made him feel like a complete failure, and he took that lesson to heart. His fifth grade year was littered with missing assignments, half-completed work, lies about schoolwork, and an overall horrible attitude. I felt like I was losing my child at the age of 11.
We tried the usual (punishment, lectures, etc.) to no avail. I bought this book, read it and implemented it to the best of my ability. It was counterintuitive to me (no punishment for bad behavior?) but I'm so thankful I went against my intuition.
It proceeded about like he described: two months of not a lot of progress, then the tide began to turn. The turning of the tide, however, corresponded to the end of the school year. He moved from elementary school to middle school, and is doing quite well. He's getting A's and B's in the honor program, is excited about school, and confident of his ability to succeed.
My only complaint about the book is that there aren't a lot of "success" stories included.

bright minds, poor grades

This is a great book. Dr. Michael Whitley has hit a home run.
Here is his premise. Kids want to be independent but as teenagers they are not quite ready. I disagree with the reviewer who says this book will not work on kids who are too far gone. Can you ever classify a kid as too far gone? I doubt it. The techniques discussed in this book are good for all ages of "children" who procrastinate and not just for helping children with school work. Many adults are locked in a syndrome of underachieving because they never had parents who let them experience success and failure in a loving, tolerant enviornment.
The parent is in charge. He does not rant and rave but talks to the child in a calm reassuring voice. The child begins to realize that he is ultimately responsible for his own decisions.
The parent keeps close track of the child's progress but withholds judgement. The child becomes his own best critic. The child appreciates the parental care and lack of criticism. If the child slips it is another teaching moment. Ingenious.
So far so good in our family, I hope this book helps yours too.

About the Author

James L. Good Advice

I purchased this video along with the book. It's o.k. but it moves SLOW. I realise it's hard to produce an exciting tutorial video. I prefer the book. It's simply not as dry as the video. Still, Ibarionex provides valuable information in the video. If you can handle the pace that it is shot, then it's a good buy.

Was excited to get this DVD but mostly disappointed with the overall program. I know these things are hard to do, especially when shooting live, but his partner was repeating several phrases like "right" "right" "right" to the point of pain. If you are going to show image data (fstop, shutter speed, ISO) please include focal length, especially since they talked a great deal about lens choice. Section in the park was an utter waste of time. Clearly watching a photographer try to create something out of nothing can be interesting if a result is achieved. Instead, we watched nothing get created. A shame because clearly he's a passionate street photographer and I was hoping that this video will encourage me to take an actual workshop, but I'm having second thoughts.

Poor sound quality from time to time. They deleted the incident talking about why they could not take a picture of a building. Blew the chance to talk about the rights of photographers. Felt like a cop out.

Check reviews on the book. Maybe the book is better. As for me, the video was mostly a waste of good money.

Good tips, but not what I expected

I picked up some good trips from this DVD, particularly around approaching strangers in the street for portraits, however the title of the DVD and cover image suggested it would be more focused on finding the perfect light for a portrait. I have to say although it offers some valuable information, it wasn't really what I expected.

About the Author

Gerald Cavanagh is the Charles T. Fisher III Chair of Business Ethics and Professor of Management at the University of Detroit Mercy.  He is the author of 40 research articles and five books.  Jerry Cavanagh held the Gasson Chair at Boston College, the Dirksen Chair of Business Ethics at Santa Clara University, and was Academic Vice President and Provost and Interim Dean at the College of Business Administration the University of Detroit Mercy.  Cavanagh holds a B.S. in engineering (Case) and graduate degrees in philosophy and education (St. Louis U.), theology (Loyola, Chicago), a doctorate in management (Michigan State), and is a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He chaired the Social Issues Division of the Academy of Management, and the All-Academy of Management Task Force on Ethics and he has served on the board of trustees of Fordham, Santa Clara, Xavier, Holy Cross, Loyola University of New Orleans and the University of Detroit.  He enjoys backpacking and the National Parks.

Book Falling Apart

I received the book in a timely manner. However, once I actually began to use the book it began falling apart. The pages are pulling away from the spine every time I turn the pages. This is a textbook so I must refer to it often. I take very good care of books, especially textbook rentals, keeping in mind that the next person may appreciate a clean copy. Disappointed.

This is the most opinionated college book I have ever read. I can't believe this is required reading! The book condition was fine, just hate the content!
